Delhi on fog alert, air pollution to rise

Dense to very dense fog is all set to make a comeback over Delhi-NCR. This will not only curtail the day maximums but will also increase the air pollution manifolds.

Thick fog has been evading the northern plains including Delhi for the last few days, leading to good visibility conditions. This has been on account of the continues flow of cold and dry northwesterlies with increased wind speed.

Now, weather conditions are all set to change during the next few days. Wind pattern is likely to change to easterlies from northwesterlies during the next 24 hours. Humid winds have been blowing from the fresh well-marked low pressure area in Southeast Bay of Bengal.

Wind speed is also likely to drop to light to very light. Moreover, minimum temperatures are also settling in the single digit around 9°C.

All these factors will lead to development of dense to very dense fog over Delhi-NCR. Thick fog cover will not let the mercury rise and day maximums may drop marginally.

As stated above, levels of air pollution which are already settling in ‘unhealthy’ levels will further deteriorate and may rise to ‘severe’ category once again.

According to weathermen, light and calm winds and increased moisture levels will not let the pollutants blow away. As a result, they will keep lingering in the atmosphere closer to the earth surface.
