Delhi rains have remained far and few during the past few days. So much so that the city has remained dry for the past twenty days. During the last two to three days, both minimums and maximums were also settling above the normal levels.
The city received a mere 3 mm of rain on January 7. Thereafter, the weather remained dry for a long time. However, rain gods finally bestowed some kindness over the national capital and moderate rains were observed in Delhi and the NCR region on Republic Day.
The city had begun to receive rainfall since the morning hours and the rains continued until late night hours in many parts of the city. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Palam observatory recorded 35 mm of rain. Not only this, 30 mm of rainfall was also observed at the Safdarjung observatory.
The monthly rainfall in Delhi stands at 19.3 mm which was surpassed in a 24-hour period itself. Not only this, as per the available date, this January happens to be the wettest since the year 1999. The monthly mean in terms of rain stood at 47 mm in January 1999.
Thereafter, such heavy rains were not observed until the year 2017. Not only this, these rains ocuured in a period of 24 hours are also the highest in the last ten years. The last time such rains were observed in January was in 2013 when 21 mm rainfall was received.
