Delhi observes coldest day and night of the seasonAs December began, Delhiites started craving for a taste of winter. The city had been recording above normal temperatures for the past few days. However, for the past two days, there has been a drop in temperatures resulting in cold weather conditions over Delhi.

The maximum temperature dropped down to 15.7°C, resulting in cold day conditions over the national capital throughout the day. Not only this, the minimums registered a significant decline as well. For the first time, the night temperatures dropped to single digit at 6.8°C.

With a significant reduction in both day and night temperatures, Delhi-NCR has recorded the coldest day of the season. The normal maximum for the national capital is 23°C, the minimums stand at 8°C. Thus, while the maximums were recorded 7 degrees below normal, minimums were 2 degrees below the normal temperature.

Before this, the lowest minimum for Delhi was recorded at 10.1°C on December 5. Usually, the city observes minimums in single digit only during the last week of December when the hills of North India record heavy snowfall resulting in a white Christmas.

The drop in the temperatures has been an offshoot of the first widespread snowfall over the hills of North India including the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir along with Himachal Pradesh. Due to the snowfall, icy cold northwesterly winds have been blowing over the plains of North India resulting in a sudden drop in the temperatures.

The temperatures are likely to witness a sharp dip as most of December is still left. There may be more such instances when Delhi records minimums in single digits.
