The capital territory, Delhi-NCR observes severe cold wave conditions from December 15- 31. In the month of December, the minimums are in the double digits clocking somewhere around 10°C. By the end of the month, the minimums come down to 7°C.
This year, i.e. in December 2018 has been close to the earlier records of past 10 years. On December 30, 2013, the minimum recorded was 2.4°C, whereas on December 28, 2014 saw minimum at 2.6°C,which is the same night temperature recorded this year on December 29.
During winters, January is the peak winter month, wherein the maximums take a dip by almost 3°C and settles somewhere around 20°C or so. However, in the month of December the maximums are around 23°C. Thus, it is not incorrect to say that the month of January witnesses cold weather during both days and nights. This is usually the harshest period in winters and goes milder thereafter in February.
Coming back to present scenario, it is the twelfth consecutive day when the minimums have clocked around 5°C and even below that. The lowest minimum till date was recorded at 2.6°C on December 29.
But now a Western Disturbance is marked over the hills of Jammu and Kashmir. Thus, due to this, the cold wave should be abating as minimums will see a rise and will settle above 5°C. In fact, there has already been a rise in minimums as on Monday, Delhi recorded night temperature at 3.8°C. As per Skymet Weather, first week of January will be a shade better than the last week of December. This scenario is expected to continue for coming four to five days but it would be a marginal one only.
The maximums, which are presently hovering around 23°C, would witness a drop and settle around 20°C. Also, there are chances of very light rain coming Saturday night and Sunday morning. Thus, although night temperatures would rise but since there will be a drop in day maximums, the feel like factor would be more.
Because of the presence of local pollutants, Palam’s visibility is less than that of Safdarjung’s. The reason for the same is localized conditions, the pollution level is at a higher note over this area.
