Delhi NCR Air Pollution Live Update With Air Quality: Delhi pollution to remain very poor for another 24 hrs, improvement expected thereafter

January 28, 2020 12:21 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Updated on January 28, 12:20 pm: Delhi pollution to remain very poor for another 24 hrs, improvement expected thereafter

Pollution is still in ‘poor to very poor’ category in most parts of Delhi and NCR. However, PM 10 has improved to some extent and is in ‘moderate’ category in some parts of the region. On the other hand, PM 2.5 is in ‘poor to very poor’ category.

Although patchy showers have occurred in Delhi and NCR during the last 24 hours, these rains have failed to wash away the pollutants as they were not widespread in nature.

We expect AQI to settle between ‘poor and very poor’ category for another 48 hours. From January 30, wind speed may increase, which might improve pollution to some extent.

Updated on January 27, 10:40 am: No chances of improvement in the air quality of Delhi and NCR for another 24 to 48 hrs

Delhi pollution has increased during the last 24 hours. At present, PM 2.5 is in ‘very poor’ category while PM 10 is in ‘poor to very poor’ category. In one or two pockets, it is in ‘moderate’ category. The overall AQI of Delhi and NCR has been recorded at 336 this morning.

Strong north-westerlies on January 23 and 24 had helped in upgrading the AQI in ‘moderate to satisfactory’ category. Since then, the humidity has increased and the wind-speed has also reduced, leading to foggy conditions. In the last 24 hours, the winds have gone calm to very light and as a resulted the air quality has again deteriorated.

We do not expect any improvement in the situation for another 24 to 48 hours. Although there are chances of rain in Delhi and NCR tomorrow, we need to check for the intensity in order to bring an improvement in the air quality.

Updated on January 20, 12:54 pm: Delhi Pollution to improve after Jan 21

The overall AQI of Delhi and NCR was recorded at 228 today. PM 10 is in 'moderate' category at present, while PM 2.5 in 'poor to very poor' category. No major change is expected in the pollution levels during next 24 to 48 hours, due to light nature of the winds.

Improvement is anticipated from the afternoon of January 22, as the moderate to strong winds from northwest direction will blow over the region. These winds would continue until January 24 or 25. And the pollution may come in 'moderate' category in most of the places.

Updated on January 18, 1:30 pm: Air deteriorates once again in Delhi NCR, improvement likely tomorrow

Yesterday Delhi saw a bit cleaner air, thanks to the recent rains. In fact, most places recorded air quality in ‘satisfactory’ to ‘moderate’ category.

However, today morning the situation has deteriorated further and most places are seeing ‘moderate’ to ‘poor’ air once again. The overall AQI as of 1:30 pm stands at 218. The reason for the current quality of air can be partially attributed to the foggy conditions persisting over the city.

Tomorrow onward, the surface winds will be strengthening. This might push down the pollution levels over Delhi NCR once again.

Updated on January 17, 10:13 am: After some clean air days, Delhi pollution to make a comeback now

After breathing some clean air, Delhi-NCR is now again gearing up for some tough days ahead. The relief during the last two days were on account of winter rains, which have washed away the pollutants from the atmosphere.

The overall AQI (Air Quality Index)of Delhi and NCR is 266, wherein PM 10 across many places in the state reported to be 'moderate' category. Meanwhile, PM 2.5 was in 'poor' category in many parts while isolated pockets are still in 'very poor' category.

According to weathermen, with rains abating from Delhi-NCR, winds have also changed their direction from humid southeasterly to cold northwesterly. But despite change in wind pattern, we would see hike in air pollution on account of low wind speed.

At present, winds have been blowing from northwesterly to the tune of 10-12 kmph, which do not have potential of clearing the atmosphere. Thus, local pollutants are likely to pile up once again. What is more worrying is that we do not see relief from these conditions in the coming days.

For dispersing pollutants, there should unabated flow of northwesterly winds at the speed of 15-20 kmph gusting up to 25 kmph, which is not anticipated anytime soon.

Updated on January 15, 10:53 am: After a month or so, Delhiites to breathe clean air

Delhi pollution was in 'poor' to 'very poor' category since the last few days. During the last 24 hours, the air quality has improved a bit due to the continuation of moderate winds from Northwest. Today, the overall AQI of Delhi and NCR is 215 and almost all the places in Delhi and NCR reported 'moderate' category of PM 10 and PM 2.5 is also in 'moderate' category in many parts while isolated pockets are still in 'poor' to 'very poor' category.

Now, light rain is anticipated in Delhi and NCR by tonight, which may increase by tomorrow. Therefore, there will be further improvement in the air pollution of the entire Delhi and NCR by tomorrow. By January 17, we expect AQI of some areas of Delhi and NCR may come down to the 'satisfactory' category. Thus, we can say that after a month or so, Delhi is going to breathe clean air.

Updated on January 14, 11:22 am: Air quality likely to improve by Jan 16 in Delhi and NCR

Delhi pollution has once again slipped in 'very poor' category. The overall AQI of Delhi and NCR as of today is 306. PM 10 is in the 'moderate' category in many parts with 'poor' at a few places. While PM 2.5 is in 'poor' to 'very poor' category. We do not expect much improvement in Delhi pollution for another 24 hours. By January 16, rains with good intensity are likely to be seen in Delhi and NCR which will help in washing away the pollutants further leading to cleaner air of Delhi and NCR. Thus, the pollution level may come down to the 'moderate' category in many parts of Delhi and NCR.

Updated on January 13, 01:00 pm: Rain might improve air quality in Delhi and NCR

After a short relief, pollution has once again increased and entered ‘poor to very poor’ category in most parts of Delhi and NCR. The winds in the last 24 hours have gone light and humidity levels have also increased.

Meteorologists have predicted chances of rain in Delhi and NCR today, however, we need to check for the intensity and spread. If the intensity turns out to be good, there might be a significant improvement in air quality. Otherwise, pollution levels may improve marginally. AQI is expected to enter ‘moderate’ category in some parts.

Updated on January 11, 02:10 pm: Delhi pollution to be poor yet again, rain on Jan 13 might bring relief

During the last 24 hours, AQI was recorded in ‘moderate to poor’ category in most parts of Delhi and NCR. However, as the winds are going to become light by the night of January 12, once again deterioration in air quality is anticipated, leading to ‘poor to very poor’ levels of pollution.

Relief is expected by the evening of January 13, wherein rain may lash Delhi and NCR area. These rains will help in the dispersal of air pollutants and AQI may enter ‘moderate to satisfactory’ category.

Updated on January 8, 12:36 pm: Delhiites to breathe clean air, improvement likely after a long time

From the last week of December until January 5, Delhi pollution was in ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ category. But rains, as well as moderate northwesterly winds in Delhi and NCR as well as in the northern plains, helped the pollution level to reduce from ‘very poor’ to ‘moderate’ category.

At present, PM 10, as well as PM 2.5 both, are in the ‘moderate’ category in many parts of Delhi and NCR. Further, we expect that the pollution level will remain in the ‘moderate’ category for the next two days. As rains are likely by January 13 in Delhi and NCR, there may be further improvement in the air.

Thereafter, many parts of Northwest plains including Delhi and NCR will see rain and thundershower activities by January 16 and January 17 so we expect AQI to come in the ‘satisfactory’ category. Thus, we can say Delhi will breathe cleaner air after a long time.

Updated on January 7, 13:31 pm: Pollution comes down in Delhi, more relief ahead

Delhi pollution which was in ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ category in most places are expected to improve now and will be recorded in ‘moderate’ to ‘poor’ category at many places. Already the overall AQI in Delhi has come down to 286 as compared to yesterday’s 340. Isolated pockets might even record air in ‘very poor’ category. Rains will wash away the pollutants. Thus, Delhiites can breathe comparatively less polluted air for the next two to three days.

Updated on January 2, 12:50 pm: Pollution continues to remain in very poor category, no big relief ahead

Pollution levels still remains in ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ category over most parts of Delhi and adjoining regions. We do not expect any relief from the hazardous air conditions in the coming days as well.

Although due to rise in day temperatures, pollutants may disperse to some extent in the day, pollution will continue to remain in ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ category.

Updated on December 24, 12:27: No relief insight for Delhi and NCR, AQI to remain in very poor category

At present, the AQI of Delhi and NCR is in 'poor' to 'very poor' category. Moderate to dense fog during morning hours gets mixed with the local pollutants which further leads to an increase in AQI levels. As the cold day conditions are still persisting, we do not expect any relief from poor air zone over Delhi and NCR.

Although, northwesterly winds are blowing and as mist, haze and shallow fog are prevailing during the early morning hours, due to which the pollutants are mixing with it which are further leading to 'poor' to 'very poor' air quality index.

Have a look at Air Quality figures recorded for various areas around Delhi NCR:

Updated on December 23, 13:43: AQI in Delhi-NCR in poor to very poor zone

Currently, the Air Quality Index in Delhi and NCR is in poor to very poor zone with few places in severe zone. The overall Air Quality Index recorded today is around 304, despite the blowing of dry northwesterly winds at a speed of 10-12 kmph.

Due to low minimums, high humidity levels, and low mixing height, the pollutants are trapped in the lower levels near the earth's surface. Moreover, moderate to dense fog during morning hours gets mixed with the local pollutants which further leads to an increase in AQI levels.

As the temperatures are not rising and Cold day conditions are persisting, therefore the pollutants are also not lifting. Rather we can say it like this that till the time there is not enough sunshine and temperatures continue to drop, the pollution levels will remain high.

Updated on December 22, 10:28: Delhi to witness 'severe' air today as well, slight improvement likely during next 2 to 3 days

During the last couple of days, Delhi was in grip of 'very poor' to 'severe' air. The northern parts of Delhi have experienced 'severe' pollution level while the southern parts remained in 'very poor' category.

Today, due to increase in wind speed, the pollution level has improved slightly. There is a variation in the pollution category over Delhi and NCR at different places. The overall AQI of Delhi and NCR is in 'moderate' to 'severe' category. Chandni Chowk is experiencing 'severe' air quality while other places are experiencing 'moderate' to 'very poor' air.

During the next two to three days, wind speed prevailing over the region of Delhi and NCR would be light to moderate from Northwesterly direction, so the pollution level is expected to improve slightly. Hence, 'moderate' to 'poor' air is expected to prevail over multiple parts of Delhi and NCR in the coming days. Although, a few central parts of Delhi may still see 'severe' air quality.

Have a look at Air Quality figures recorded for various areas around Delhi NCR:

Updated on December 21, 13:40: Air in ‘severe’ category over Delhi, no early relief likely

Most parts of Delhi and NCR are experiencing foggy conditions for the last few days. Presently, a dense fog layer is extending over a vast area from eastern parts of Pakistan to Bihar, across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

At present, no strong winds are blowing over the region. Light northwesterly winds are unable to tow away the local pollutants. Due to unavailability of radiation, and the presence of thick foggy layer, pollution conditions have become severe.

The northerly and central parts of Delhi are seeing ‘severe’ air quality while southern parts witnessing ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ air.

Hence, pollution is likely to remain as it is for the next few days as the winds will remain light due to the persisting Western Disturbance.

Updated on December 19, 11:48: Delhi pollution in 'poor' zone, improvement likely in the next 24 hours

Today during the early morning hours, winds remained very light and variable due to which the upper-level fog has settled over many parts of Delhi NCR and adjoining areas. Also, dense fog was observed over some regions.

The content of the pollutants also increased over the area due to the increase in the moisture level and poor visibility. The overall AQI of Delhi and NCR remained in 'poor' category at some places while a few places saw 'very poor' air.

Now as the day progresses, we expect northwesterly winds to set in which will clear some level of pollution content. Some improvement is expected towards the afternoon hours and the AQI can come down to 'moderate' category.

During the next 24 hours, we expect winds to remain light which will again lead to further deterioration in the pollution level over many parts of Delhi and NCR during the early morning hours. AQI may become 'very poor' in some places.

Updated on December 18, 14:59: With sunshine in sight, Delhi pollution in moderate to poor zone

Presently, moderate northwesterly winds are prevailing over the national territory, Delhi, and the fog layer has also disappeared. Sunshine in the city has made a comeback, and the maximums are once again on a rising trend. The pollution levels are likely to settle somewhere between the ‘moderate’ to ‘poor’ category.

However, tomorrow onward the speed of winds will reduce, yet sunshine will be there. However, December 20 onward it is very likely that the pollution levels will deteriorate, and the day temperature will rise.

Updated on December 17, 14:34: Delhi Pollution still in 'poor' zone, no improvement for 48 hrs

Presently there is no significant weather system that is affecting the northwestern plains of our country including Delhi-NCR. For now, moderate northerly, northwesterly winds are blowing over the plains. Due to available moisture in the lower levels, the pollution levels are not expected to improve. But moderate surface winds are blowing over the capital region. We can say that the pollution levels will continue to be in poor to very poor category and moderate over very few pockets. Such conditions may continue for the coming 48 hours or so.

Updated on December 16, 11:12: AQI improves, Delhi pollution becomes moderate

Significant improvement was seen in the Delhi air quality on Monday morning, with AQI (Air Quality Index) at most places slipping in 'moderate' category. This can be attributed to the winds that have picked up pace in the last 24 hours.

According to Skymet Weather, after the passage of Western Disturbance, northwesterly winds have made a comeback. These winds have seen increase in the speed and at present, moderate winds can be seen reaching Delhi-NCR. Similar situation would prevail for the next 24 hours as well.

Updated on December 15, 11:20: Delhiites to breathe clean air as pollution level likely to remain in 'satisfactory' category

On December 12 and December 13, rainfall and thundershower activities have affected the region of Delhi and NCR. These rains have resulted in significant improvement in pollution levels. Now the overall air quality has improved and the pollution levels are in the 'moderate' to 'satisfactory' category.

During the next two to three days, the effect of active Western Disturbance will be prevailing over Delhi and NCR which will further decrease the temperatures during the early morning hours. The winds will also change their direction from easterly-northeasterly to westerly-northwesterly which will be cool in nature. So, the pollution level is likely to remain in the 'satisfactory' category.

Updated on December 14, 13:07:  Pollution level in the poor zone during morning hours, improvement during the day-time

As the winds are changing now, the northerly/ northwesterly winds will set in soon over the northwestern plains of our country. Thus the Air Quality will improve marginally in Delhi and NCR.

However, during the morning hours, the dense fog in some pockets may lead to a rise in the pollution levels and it then maybe in poor to very poor category. As the day will progress and winds will pick up the pace, the Air Quality will improve and then the pollution levels can be somewhere in moderate to poor category.
Until December 19, the Air Quality will remain like this. However as soon as the next Western Disturbance will approach the hills, the Air Quality will once again start deteriorating.

Updated on December 12, 13:36:  Delhiites wake up to one of the most polluted mornings, rains to bring relief by late afternoon

The residents of Delhi woke up to one of the most polluted mornings today, with AQI entering ‘severe’ category at 407. The situation is expected to remain as such for the next few hours. Thereafter, there are chances of rain in Delhi and NCR, say by late afternoon hours today. These rains would continue until tomorrow and would be of major help in washing away the air pollutants. As a result, pollution levels are expected to improve, leading to much cleaner air. AQI might enter ‘moderate to satisfactory’ category by tomorrow.

Updated on December 11, 11:46: Delhi Pollution to improve after next 24 hours, AQI to become satisfactory

According to the meteorologists, AQI in Delhi and adjoining area will settle between ‘poor and severe’ category for another 24 hours. Thereafter, considering chances of rain, say from December 12, the pollution levels are expected to improve.

These rains would be able to wash away the pollutants leading to much cleaner air. A significant improvement is likely to be seen and AQI might enter ‘moderate to satisfactory’ category by this time.

Updated on December 10, 12:40:  Delhiites likely to breathe cleaner air during the next 48 hours

At present, the air pollution of Delhi and NCR is in 'poor to very poor' category as the winds blowing across the region are very light. While some places of Delhi and NCR are in the 'severe' category.

According to our meteorologists, light rainfall activities are expected by December 12 which would help in dispersing the air pollutants. Thus, AQI will enter 'satisfactory' category.

Updated on December 9, 11:02:  No relief from Delhi Pollution until Dec 11

A large part of the National Capital Territory is still under ‘poor to very poor’ category, with one or two pockets struggling ‘severe’ category of pollution levels.

According to Skymet Weather, Delhiites have to breathe bad air quality for the next two to three days as winds would remain light and calm, not being capable of dispersing the air pollutants. Mixing of air pollutants with shallow fog during early morning hours would further worsen the situation. AQI will settle under ‘poor to very poor’ category in most parts, while one or two pockets have to battle ‘severe’ air quality.

Have a look at Air Quality figures recorded for various areas around Delhi NCR:

Updated on December 8, 12:50: Delhi pollution shows a marginal improvement, rains to bring relief

The overall AQI of Delhi showed a little improvement today morning as it came down from yesterday’s 388 to 361. Despite this, pollution levels in Delhi and NCR continue to be in ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ category at present.

Soon, the wind direction is likely to change from northwesterly to easterly- southeasterly winds during the next 24 hours. These winds would increase humidity over the region, leading to the formation of shallow fog and mist.

Low temperatures, high humidity, light winds and layer of fog mixed with air pollutants, will lead to pollution level plunging into ‘severe’ category over most parts of the region.

However, a relief will ensue after December 11, as rains make an appearance over the region.

Updated on December 7, 13:00:

Today the overall AQI in Delhi and NCR was recorded at 380. Many parts of Delhi and NCR are witnessing air in ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ category. A few places are recording air in ‘severe’ category as well.

The pollution levels are increasing day by day due to the absence of any major weather system affecting the area. No strong winds are blowing over the region and temperatures are consistently low.

As had been forecast by Skymet earlier as well, we do not expect any significant relief from pollution for the next few days until December 12 or 13.

Have a look at Air Quality figures recorded for various areas around Delhi NCR:

Updated on December 6, 11:50 AM: Pollution plunges in Severe category, no relief anytime soon

As had been forecast by Skymet, the pollution level in Delhi has further increased today. The overall AQI of Delhi NCR was recorded at 363 in the morning. Most places in the National Capital are witnessing air in ‘very poor’ category. In almost all the places PM 2.5 is consistent at ‘very poor’ category whereas PM 10 is in the ‘poor’ category. A few places in the city like Chandni Chowk, Noida and Dhirpur are witnessing air close to ‘severe’ category.

We do not expect any significant relief from pollution in the region for the next few days as the winds will remain mostly light. However, some relief might be seen around December 10.

Updated on December 5, 11:40 AM: No relief from Delhi Pollution in coming days

Delhi Pollution has been increasing for the last 24 hours and today the overall Air Quality Index of Delhi NCR was recorded at 334. PM 2.5 levels are in poor category, while PM 10 still is in moderate category in some parts. Noida on the other hand is seeing PM 10 in the severe category.

No relief in terms of pollution is expected in the coming days as light winds will continue to blow over the region with temperatures being on the lower side.

Updated on December 4, 12:20 PM: Air in Delhi deteriorates, no improvement likely

After a rather good air week in Delhi, following speedy winds from the North, Delhi woke up to a bad air day today. Today morning, the AQI of the national capital Delhi was recorded at 305. As had been forecast by Skymet, pollution in many places is in the ‘poor’ category. A few places are recording Air Quality in ‘Very Poor’ category.

Since the winds blowing from the North have become light, the air is likely to remain the same for the next few days in a row.

We expect the air to deteriorate even further in the coming days especially in the next 48 hours.

Have a look at Air Quality figures recorded for various areas around Delhi NCR:

Updated on December 3, 11:15 AM: Delhi air quality in nears poor category again

It seems that good days of better air quality in Delhi has come to an end, but the situation is not as grim as it was before. After a long time, isolated pockets of Delhi and adjoining areas of Noida, Gurugram, and Faridabad have come under 'very poor' category today. But still most places are in 'moderate to poor' category. In fact, PM 10 is in 'moderate' category all across the national capital region but PM 2.5 is in 'poor' category.

According to weathermen, pollution levels usually increase during the morning hours as winds during night become calm or very light which helps in accumulation of local pollutants. As the sun comes up and temperatures increase along with wind speed, pollution levels also tend to improve by early noon hours. Air quality during the day is comparatively better during the day time.

We expect similar situation to continue until December 4. Thereafter, there may be slight decrease in wind speed and pollution may increase. It may then enter 'very poor' category over some parts of Delhi, but we do not expect severe pollution to make a comeback anytime soon.

Updated on December 1, 12:15 PM: Next three to four days promise good air over Delhi

Pollution levels have decreased significantly and are prevailing in ‘satisfactory’ levels over Delhi and NCR for the last few days. Major reason behind this suppressing of pollution levels goes to the rains over the region on November 27 and 28. Due to the blowing northerly winds, the pollution level is in mostly ‘moderate’ category over most parts.

At present, no significant system is moving in close vicinity of Delhi NCR. Cool northerly winds will keep blowing over the region. Since light breeze will be continuing during the day for the next some days, hence pollution levels will be varying between ‘satisfactory’ to ‘moderate’ category.

Hence, good air is likely to prevail over the region for the next some days.

Updated on November 30, 12:00 PM: Another satisfactory air day for Delhi, similar forecast for next few days

After a rather ‘satisfactory’ air day yesterday, Delhi’s air continues to remain in 'moderate' category today as well. As of 8:30 am, the overall PM 2.5 level for the city remains at 83 which falls in ‘moderate’ category.

At present, cold northerly winds are blowing over the region with moderate intensity. Cleaner air from this area is blowing towards Delhi and NCR which has further improved the pollution levels of Delhi.

Moreover, similar air is going to continue for the next some days as strong surface winds are forecast to blow over the region. Sky will remain mainly clear.

Updated on November 29, 9:30 AM: Delhi air improves, cleanest in the month

Delhi pollution has come down to ‘satisfactory’ category in most places of the region for the first time in the month. Today morning, the overall AQI of Delhi was recorded at 97. This is the cleanest air recorded in Delhi this month.

This improvement in air can be traced back to the fairly widespread rain and thundershower activities over the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana. Also, its been raining over Delhi and NCR since last two days.

Now, we do not expect pollution to increase much over Delhi and NCR. However, there may be a marginal rise as the winds will become weak after 24 hours. This is when the pollution levels might go down into ‘moderate’ category.

Updated on November 28, 11:00 AM: Delhi air gets better as rains lash the region

Rains have come down like a harbinger of better air for Delhiites. The current AQI figures over Delhi have improved from 'poor' to 'moderate' category over most parts today.

The reason behind this comparatively better air can be attributed to the scattered rain and thundershowers were observed in the northern parts of Delhi and its adjoining areas during the last 24 hours. These rains were accompanied by moderate Northwest winds, which have played quite an important role in improving the air.

Updated on November 27,12:15 PM: Marginal improvement in air quality today, might worsen November 29 onward

Since yesterday, easterly southeasterly winds are blowing over Delhi and NCR. At present, pollution is in the ‘moderate’ category over most places. A few places are witnessing ‘poor’ air as well.

As the winds have gained speed, therefore, we expect Delhi’s air quality to remain constant for the coming days as well. Many parts of Punjab and Haryana have already received good rains. Delhi-NCR is also expected to receive patchy rains today.

Moreover, the blowing easterly winds will not allow smoke from Punjab and Haryana to blow towards Delhi and NCR.

The wind direction is once again expected to change on November 29. Therefore, there might be a marginal increase in pollution on the morning of November 29.

Have a look at Air Quality figures recorded for various areas around Delhi NCR:

Updated on November 26, 9:58 AM: Delhi Pollution to become severe despite rain on November 26 and 27

In the last 24 hours, the winds have gone light over Delhi and NCR and have changed direction to easterlies, which are comparatively humid in nature.

Whenever there is a combination of light winds and high humidity, pollution levels soar. And such has been the scenario since today morning as pollution has increased marginally over the region. AQI (PM 2.5) has once again entered ‘poor to very poor’ category in a large portion of Delhi and NCR.

Although there are chances of patchy rain in Delhi and its adjoining areas today and tomorrow, these rains would not be any help in improving the air quality. In fact, these showers will only make the situation worse by not being able to disperse the pollutants due to their light nature. As a result, there is a high possibility that AQI (PM 2.5) may enter ‘severe’ category by November 27 or 28.

Have a look at Air Quality figures recorded for various areas around Delhi NCR:

Updated on November 25, 9:56 AM: Air quality in Delhi to deteriorate from tomorrow, AQI to enter poor category

By tomorrow, the wind direction would change to easterlies and there are also chances isolated light rain in Delhi and its adjoining areas on November 26 and 27.

These patchy rains would increase humidity levels. And whenever there is a combination of light winds and high humidity, pollution levels spike. Such weather conditions also lead to formation of mist/haze and shallow fog during the morning hours.

Thus, Delhi Pollution will once again increase from tomorrow and AQI would enter ‘moderate to poor’ category in most of the places. The air quality would deteriorate further on November 27 and pollution levels would once again become 'very poor'.

Updated on November 24, 9:30 AM: Pollution continues to choke Delhi, improvement soon

As had been forecast by Skymet, Delhi pollution has improved a bit during the last 24 hours. At present, PM 10 is in the 'moderate' category over most places in Delhi and NCR. However, PM 2.5 continues to be in ‘very poor’ to the ‘poor’ category. We expect similar conditions to continue for another 24 hours over the region.

Thereafter, a marginal improvement is expected as moderate winds from West and Northwest direction will start blowing. Also, we expect isolated to scattered rain activities over the region tomorrow. On and off rains are expected to continue until November 27 over Delhi and NCR which will help in reducing the pollution.

Updated on November 23, 9:40 AM: Marginal improvement in Delhi pollution as winds blow over the region

Despite the ongoing blowing winds over Delhi, pollution still continues to be in ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ category over the city today morning as well. Light northwesterly winds are continually blowing over the region since midnight. The winds are expected to pick even more pace during the daytime. These winds might lead to a decrease in pollution levels over Delhi and NCR.

However, this improvement is short-lived as these winds will subside soon after as a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to approach Western Himalayas by November 25. This is when the air quality will once again plunge.

Updated on November 22, 12:30 PM: Delhi air quality hazardous again, no relief till Nov 28

Delhiites woke up to a 'bad air' day today as well. The overall AQI of Delhi and NCR as of this morning was recorded at 359. The air in many areas is in ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ category. One or two places are witnessing pollution in the ‘severe’ category as well.

We expect similar pollution to prevail over the region for at least the next 24 hours. Thereafter, November 23 onward the prevailing Western Disturbance would have moved away and the wind speed will increase from Northwest direction. There may be a marginal decrease in pollution levels.

Pollution levels will continue to be in ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ category until November 28. Winds will pick up pace and pollution might come down further.

Updated on November 20, 9:01 AM: Delhi air pollution to be hazardous again, no relief till November 23

As predicted, Delhi pollution has been on the rising trend during the last 24 hours. At present, PM 2.5 is moderate to poor category and PM 10 in poor to very poor category in most of the places. Air Quality Index (AQI) for Delhi-NCR is 269, which is very unhealthy.

Further, we expect Air quality to deteriorate further and reach in hazardous category. Wind speed has already decreased and is likely to reduce further in the next two days. With this, parts of Delhi-NCR may come under the hazardous category on November 21 and 22.

This increase in the Delhi air pollution can be attributed to the passage of Western Disturbance that has changed the direction of the wind as well as slowed down its pace. We can now expect some relief only by November 24, when northwesterly winds would return and pick up pace.

Updated on November 19, 10:01 AM: Delhi Pollution to become severe soon

According to Skymet Weather, a fresh WD would soon approach the Western Himalayas. This system would restrict the flow of moderate winds over Delhi and NCR region. In the absence of these winds, the air pollutants would again find their ways to accumulate near the earth’s surface.

There will be a gradual increase in pollution levels after the next 24 hours. And by tomorrow, AQI would enter ‘poor to very poor’ category in most of the areas.

By November 21 or 22, the situation would become grim as a few pockets would have to battle severe levels of pollution.

Updated on November 18, 10:03 AM: Air Quality improves in Delhi and NCR

Today, the residents of Delhi woke up to much cleaner air as AQI in the major areas of Delhi and NCR was observed in ‘moderate’ category during morning hours. This clearly indicates that there has been a significant improvement in the air quality and the credit goes to the strong north-westerlies.

According to our meteorologists, AQI would settle in the ‘moderate’ category for a large portion of Delhi and NCR area for the next few days. The stronger winds would keep pushing away the pollutants and would not allow them to settle near the earth’s surface, at least for next two to three days.

Updated on November 17, 08:59 AM: After observing severe air quality, pollution improves in Delhi and NCR area

On Saturday, strong winds made a comeback due to which improvement was seen in the pollution levels in Delhi and NCR. The overall AQI was recorded at 357 yesterday, which happens to be around 100 notches lesser than what it was recorded on Friday. A similar condition is likely today as well as moderate winds with the speed of 15 to 20 kmph would blow. This would lead to a further decrease in air pollution as these winds will help to disperse the pollutants over a wider area.

Updated on November 16, 10:00 AM:

Pollution has down a little over Delhi today morning. Though the overall AQI as of today morning has been recorded at 505, almost all the places are still showing ‘severe’ to ‘hazardous’ air conditions.

This decrease in pollution has come because of the blowing light northwesterly winds over the region. From Saturday till Monday, the wind speed is only supposed to pick up. Thus, a considerable decrease in the air pollution will take place over the region until Monday.

From Tuesday, air is expected to turn foul once again as the winds will subside.

Updated on November 15, 10:30 AM: No respite from pollution in Delhi for third consecutive day today

After a rather ‘severe’ air quality yesterday, air pollution continues to grip Delhi for the third consecutive day today as well.

All schools in Delhi and NCR have been shut down already following a Supreme Court order after air quality plunged on Wednesday. Moreover, this time Children’s Day saw not a single child attending the school.

According to the meteorologists, no respite from this prevailing bad air is being forecast until Saturday as cloudy conditions, calm winds and low temperatures will keep prevailing.

Updated on November 14, 9:49 AM: Schools shut as air quality declines in Delhi and NCR

Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia had ordered all schools in the National Capital Territory to remain shut until Friday, considering continuously declining air quality in Delhi and adjoining region.

On Wednesday, Delhi’s overall AQI was recorded at 456, which happens to be the third-highest figure until now for this season. The winds from the northwest direction are on the much lighter side while back to back Western Disturbance are restricting the flow of moderate winds, thus suspending the movement of air pollutants. Further, no relief is likely from the toxic air quality until November 15.

Updated on November 13, 9:30 AM: Delhi NCR to see bad air today and tomorrow

After witnessing air quality in the ‘severe’ category on Tuesday, Delhi NCR is all set to see similar air today and tomorrow as well.

This rise in pollution levels could be traced back to unfavorable weather conditions clubbed with rise in the instances of farm fires in adjoining states.  No immediate recovery from the pollution is in sight as weather conditions continue to remain unfavorable with low surface winds, dipping temperatures and blowing northwesterly winds taking along smoke of farm fires towards Delhi region.

Updated on November 12, 11:17 AM: Air pollution chokes Delhi again, AQI in hazardous category, no relief soon

As predicted, Delhi air quality has once again entered in hazardous category on Tuesday morning. Unlike the last few days, Tuesday has started with hazy sunshine and less visibility. A layer of smog would be soon engulfing the national capital.

Two back to back western disturbances are likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir, which has also induced a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and Rajasthan. This has changed the wind pattern, restricting the flow of moderate northwesterly winds.

At present, winds are very light and calm and moist as well. Also, stubble burning in the adjoining state of Punjab and Haryana is also at its peak. Thus, pollutants would remain suspended in the atmosphere, resulting in the formation of layer of smog.

We do not expect any escape from the situation for the next few days, at least till November 15. Thereafter, moderate winds from the northwest would start blowing and would dissipate the pollution.

Updated on November 11, 10:43 AM: Air quality in Delhi and NCR area declines, to remain worst until Nov 14

Once again AQI has entered into ‘poor to very poor’ category in Delhi and NCR area. At present, PM 10 is in poor category, while PM 2.5 in most of the areas is in ‘very poor’ category, with overall AQI standing at 342. In fact, one or two pockets such as Noida and adjoining areas are battling severe levels of pollution.

The meteorologists have predicted a further increase in the pollution levels and AQI will enter into severe category in some more parts of Delhi and NCR area during the coming days.

A change is this scenario is anticipated November 15 onward after the passage of the Western Disturbance. As the system passes, moderate winds from northwest direction would take over the region and help in dispersal of pollutants.

Updated on November 10, 03:11 PM: Air quality in Delhi and NCR area to worsen yet again

Air quality in Delhi and NCR area has been worsening once again. At present, AQI is in ‘very poor’ category. The same air quality is likely to continue over Delhi and NCR for the next few days.

According to Skymet Weather, due to light winds blowing over Delhi NCR during the next three to four days, the pollution index is likely to take a leap in the region. ‘Poor’ to ‘very poor’ air will prevail during the next few days since no significant rains or strong winds are expected.

Updated on November 9, 01:25 PM: AQI in Delhi and NCR improves further today

Today, Delhi’s air quality continues to remain in ‘moderate’ category with a slight improvement since yesterday.
At present, a feeble Western Disturbance is moving away from North of Jammu and Kashmir and dry northwesterly prevailed over Northwest Plains of India. Wind speed will remain mainly moderate during the day with a speed of around 15-20 kmph. These winds will continue to prevail until tomorrow. Thus, pollution level is likely to continue remaining in ‘moderate’ category over Delhi and NCR in the coming days.

Updated on November 8, 09:25 AM: AQI in Delhi and NCR area to improve today

According to our meteorologists, winds are likely to pick up more pace and blow with moderate speed over Delhi and NCR area today. These winds would push away the air pollutants, leading to a further improvement in the pollution levels. However, chances of rainfall activities are less.

As per the data available with Skymet, the overall AQI of Delhi, today morning, was recorded at 314. The quality of air in many areas has improved and has entered into ‘moderate to poor’ category, while a few places have been still reeling under ‘very poor’ category.

However, this scenario is likely to get only better as a gradual improvement in air pollution is anticipated during the next 24 hours. And we expect, most of the areas to record AQI under ‘moderate to poor’ category now, barring a few pockets.

By tomorrow, the situation would improve even further as wind speed will increase up to 15 to 20 km, gusting to 25 kmph. Thus, it is safe to say that the Delhiites would be able to breathe somewhat cleaner air for the next two to three days.

Updated on November 7, 12:45 pm: Air Quality Index in Delhi deteriorates further, rains might play a saviour

After a rather clean air day in the city, Delhi's air quality has once again plunged this morning. The reason behind this increased pollution is the slowdown of winds over the region. Also, the wind direction over Delhi and NCR is changing continually due to the approaching Western Disturbance. The change in wind direction has led to a decrease in wind speed and an increase in pollution.

However, soon rains are expected over Delhi and NCR. In fact, many parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan have received moderate rains already. These rains will wash away the pollutants leading to better air quality over Delhi and NCR.

We expect the pollution over Delhi and NCR to now come down to ‘moderate’ category over most places. Isolated pockets may still be in ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ category.

Updated on November 5, 14:47 pm: Air Quality Index in Delhi and NCR improves

As per our experts, the moderate northwesterly will continue to blow and the sky will remain clear until November 6. Hence, we don’t expect smog to make a reappearance. Along with this, rains are expected over many parts of Northwest India especially the intensity will be more over Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan while light patchy rain will be seen over Delhi and NCR.

Updated on November 3, 11:50 am:

Yesterday's rain has failed to bring about any respite from the ongoing pollution in Delhi. Moreover, today Delhi is observing the worst air in the season with an overall AQI of 475.  Moreover, many places in Delhi NCR are recording AQI figures close to 700 today. Noida tops the list of the most polluted region with an AQI of 667 today.

Updated on November 2, 3:10 pm:

The overall AQI in Delhi has increased to 480 today. This is the highest AQI Delhi has seen this year. Most of the places in Delhi and NCR are witnessing pollution in ‘Severe’ to ‘Very Severe’ category. Isolated pockets are witnessing pollution in the ‘hazardous’ category as well.

Following this, no relief from Delhi pollution is in sight any time soon. Air quality might improve by November 4 when the wind speed will increase which will help in dispersing these pollutants.

Updated on November 1, 4 pm:

Over the past few years, the month of October and November have become synonymous with Air Pollution turning the city into a gas chamber every year.

Since Diwali, AQI in Delhi has crossed the 400 mark on multiple occasions.

Today, the overall AQI in Delhi has once again increased while slipping to 425. Also, Anand Vihar has recorded an AQI at 691, which is alarming. The situation sears near to an AQI of 700 which marks an ‘emergency’. A day before on October 31, the AQI had eased a bit and was reported at 412.

Here’s the Live Air Pollution Report ranking various areas in Delhi NCR as per AQI. According to the data collected over Skymet AQI App at 2:30 pm:

Looking at the list, Vasant Kunj tops the list of poor air quality and stands at 648. Gurugram’s Sector 67 falls just behind at 641, followed by Faridabad at 608. Noida’s Sector 50, Ghaziabad and Rohini are just behind with AQIs above 500.

With this, many parts of Delhi NCR are reporting air quality in ‘severe’ category. Other pockets are in ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ category.

The reason behind this pollution in Delhi can be traced back to the local pollutants clubbed with smoke particles being brought about by winds blowing from Punjab and Haryana. Moreover, the winds are presently light in intensity which are unable to disperse any pollutants.

We do not expect any significant relief from pollution for at least the next 24 hours until November 3.
