Rain in Delhi to bring Monsoon anytime now, but heavy rains not likely

Delhi Monsoon

Although Monsoon might have made an entry over the Indian mainland, but it has evaded almost all the locations in the Indian mainland by a week or more. Delhi NCR too hasn’t seen Monsoon arrival till now, as compared to its normal onset date over the region on June 29.

However, weather has now taken a u-turn and we expect Monsoon in Delhi to arrive anytime now. According to Skymet Weather, rains of varying intensity has been lashing several parts of Delhi and adjoining areas of Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad since afternoon.

With this, temperatures have taken a significant dip and is settling around 27 degree Celsius. These changes in weather conditions can be attributed to the well-marked low pressure area over Central India.

Till now, only very weak and mild signs of change in weather parameters are being experienced as of now. Monsoon is usually preceded by good pre-Monsoon activity, high humidity, change in cloud pattern and reversal of wind direction. Though humidity might haven’t taken a plunge over Delhi, but hardly any good rain activity was being reported recently around the region.

Also, as a pattern, temperatures hover around mid-30s as soon as Monsoon is about to make an entry. On the contrary, Delhi is reeling under severe heat at present. Yesterday, while Palam observatory recorded a whopping 41.4°C, Safdurjung recorded 39.4°C. These temperatures are very unusual for this time of the year.

The previous month of June was rather poor in terms of rain activity and turned out to be the driest June in history. No significant rains were experienced in the first week of July either.

Looking at the present pattern, Monsoon is going to struggle to make an onset over the region. If Monsoon onset is announced in Delhi, it will be in variance from the normal pattern.

Only some isolated, patchy moderate spells will be witnessed after the Monsoon arrival and no thumping start can be expected. Any typical Monsoon rains will be missing during the next one week. Good Monsoon rains will take time to show up over the region, at least a little over one week or so. As a relief, some intense showers might be seen around July 11 or 12.
