Delhi weather was exceptionally hot and dry as the week began. So much so that Palam Observatory recorded a maximum of 46.4 degrees. Since last two to 3 days, temperatures have witnessed a marginal drop. However, discomfort level has increased considerably.
This increase in discomfort levels was due to change in wind direction from westerly to easterly southeasterly. The change in the wind direction can be attributed to cyclone Roanu. As the system moved along the East Coast, humid winds from Bay of Bengal reached up to Delhi and across Indo-Gangetic plains.
Now, winds will again start blowing from the southwesterly or westerly direction. These dry and hot winds will decrease the humidity levels significantly resulting in some relief from the ongoing weather conditions.
In fact, a Western Disturbance is approaching and an induced cyclonic circulation is expected to form over Haryana and North Rajasthan near Delhi. Thus, isolated pockets of Delhi may witness dust storm or light thundershower activity on May 23 and 24. Other areas including Punjab, and Haryana may also witness similar weather conditions.
However, these activities will not be able to result in a significant drop in temperatures. Maximums will continue to settle above the 40-degree mark. With the decrease in humidity, slight relief can be expected during this period.
Between May 24 and 28, temperatures may again reach 44 degrees and bring back exceptionally hot weather over the national capital. These hot days will not last for long as May 29 onward, Pre-Monsoon activity will once again commence over Delhi-NCR.
