Delhi Jumps The Gun, Searing Temperatures Ahead Of Schedule

Delhi temperatures have been ascending persistently for the last week. On Sunday, 19th Feb, it breached 30 degree mark for the 1st time in this season and quickly surpassed that record yesterday. Base observatory at Safdarjung recorded maximum temperature of 33.6 degree, about 9 degree above the normal.

This also is the highest February temperature in the last 17 years. So, Monday was the hottest day of the season, when both maximum and minimum remained well above the average temperature.  The temperature may drop marginally in the next 2-3 days but big respite is not likely.

Western disturbance is clearing the northern hills today by evening/night. In the wake of the system, slightly cooler winds will sweep the plains of North India. Delhi is placed on the outer peripheral and will therefore observe residuary influence. Minimum temperatures will drop by about 2-3 degree and the maximum with a smaller margin.

Mountains and plains of North India will remain free from any weather system for the next 4 days. Layer of thin clouds is likely to come up tomorrow and will find early clearance. Next western disturbance is arriving on 25th Feb. This will be supported by induced cyclonic circulation likely to come up over Punjab and Rajasthan, on 27th Feb and later.  Mercury levels are likely to rise again after 25th Feb. The record achieved so far will be at risk of getting outstripped towards fag end of February.
