Delhi inches closer to monthly average rainfall

August 24, 2015 5:57 PM |

Rain in DelhiDelhi received above normal rainfall in the month of July and this pocket of the country received good rains in comparison to other plains which were facing shortage of rainfall.

Even in June, the national capital recorded good rainfall. As for August, Palam has already exceeded its monthly normal with Safdarjung inching towards its normal for August.

The city has been receiving mainly patchy rainfall and during the last 24 hours, heavy showers were recorded at various places. These rains are a product of the Western Disturbance hovering above Jammu and Kashmir, and the Monsoon trough.

In last 24 hours, Safdarjung recorded 55.1 mm rainfall, Palam 67.6 mm, Gurgaon 49 mm, Pusa 28 mm, Noida 14 mm, Najafgarh 17 mm, Ridge 12 mm, and Akshardham 3 mm. Aya Nagar recorded 111.3 mm of rainfall.

It must be noted that rainfall records of recent years strongly indicate that El Nino does impact rainfall over northern parts of the country, including Delhi-NCR. In recent past, we witnessed four El Nino years: 2002, 2004, 2009, and 2014. The year 2015 is also an El Nino year.

Safdarjung observatory recorded the following figures in the month of August during El Nino years: 115 mm in 2002, 271 mm in 2004, 217 mm in 2009, and 139 mm in 2014. Now the normal for Safdarjung observatory in the month of August is 253.4 mm. This year, so far, the observatory has recorded 194.5 mm of rain. Hence, in comparison to most El Nino years, the city has observed decent rainfall figures.

Partly light rain is expected in Delhi during next two days. Thereafter, intensity of rain is likely to pick up. These rains will help the city get closer to its monthly average of 253.4 mm. Maximum temperature is likely to settle in the mid-30s and minimums will hover somewhere in the mid-20s. While afternoons will be a bit warm and windy, evenings are likely to remain pleasant.
