Delhi Heat Wave Intensifies, Mercury Breach 47 Degree Celsius

June 14, 2024 10:00 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Mercury levels have risen further across most parts of Delhi. Heat wave has strengthened further. Scorching heat and ‘loo’ conditions gripped the entire Delhi/NCR. The night too was warm and humid, across the region. No relief is likely and rather, the heat is going to increase further and spill over to the next week also.

Almost all the observatories of Delhi region breached 45°C, except the record observatory at Safdarjung, which missed the mark by a whisker to register a maximum temperature of 44.7°C.  The rest of the four climate observatories at Palam, Lodhi Road, Ayanagar and Ridge exceeded 45°C. Ridge, Pusa, Pitampura and Jafarpur crossed 46°C. The highest in the region was Najafgarh and Narela with the respective high of 47.7°C and 47.5°C. These mercury levels were 7°-8°C above the average and amounted to severe heatwave conditions. Today is not going to be any better and even the base observatory at Safdarjung is likely to cross 45°C. These extreme temperatures are seen between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., across the region.

A western disturbance is likely to arrive today, over the mountains. There is a cyclonic circulation over Southwest Rajasthan in the medium levels. Parts of Punjab and North Rajasthan may have isolated dust storm activity. Delhi is a little far from its reach and will not be impacted. The intensity and spread of heat will increase over the Delhi region over the next 4-5 days. Whatever little activity, if happens, it is likely only on 19th June or later. That activity also, will not suffice to provide the required amount of relief. Delhiites will have to bear with the blazing conditions till the monsoon reaches nearer, by end of this month.
