Delhi, Haryana, Punjab to witness first spell of winter rains

Northern plains are all set to witness first spell of winter rains this weekend. Usually by now, the plains of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana should have witnessed at least 3-4 spell of winter rains. However, plains have been dry barring few traces of rains this season. As a result, winter chill has been evading the northern plains and mercury is also settling above normal only.

All thanks to the absence of any active Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir and subsequently their induced cyclonic circulations over the plains.

Now, an active Western Disturbance is moving across Jammu and Kashmir, which has already fairly widespread rain and snow over the hilly states. Moreover, another active Western Disturbance over North Pakistan is seen approaching Western Himalayas that will start affecting by January 6. Weathermen predict that this system will much stronger than the present one.

Simultaneously, it has also induced a cyclonic circulation over Central Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan.

In wake of this, Amritsar has recorded some winter rains in span of the last 24 hours, though rainfall was very light in nature. However, it has marked the commencement of the rainy spell.

Further, these rains are likely to intensify now onward and we can expect light to moderate rain over many places over Punjab. One or two places may record heavy showers as well. Several parts of Haryana are also expected to receive good rainfall, while Delhi may also see scattered rains and thundershowers by the late night of January 6 or early January 7.

According to Skymet Weather, this rainy spell will be three-day long spanning from January 6-8. Intensity of rain will peak on January 7 and will reduce considerably by January 8. Few places of Punjab and Haryana may also record hailstorm activity as we expect convective clouds to develop over some parts.

With this rainfall, minimum temperatures will rise during next 24-48 hours, while maximum temperatures are likely to drop significantly over Punjab and by 2-3 degrees over Haryana and Delhi.

By Monday, both the systems will fade away paving way for the icy cold northerly winds that will impact the entire northwestern plains. Due to this, minimum temperatures will fall by 4-5 degrees across the plains during the next week, marking the onset of winter chill that has been missing so far.

Several places of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi may expect night temperatures to settle around five degrees or even less.
