Delhi Gets Surplus Rains In September, Now Dry Weekend Ahead

Delhi has received decent monsoon showers in the past 24 hours. The base station Safdarjung and airport observatory Palam recorded 10mm and 11mm rainfall, respectively. An overcast sky through the day with intermittent spells of light to moderate showers kept the comfort level high with pleasant weather conditions. Courtesy good showers, the maximum temperature of under 30°C was recorded for the fourth occasion during this month. The lowest maximum of 27.6°C was observed on 14th Sep 2024. NCR parts, including Noida and Greater Noida had better rainfall yesterday. The outskirts of the capital city like Aligarh and Meerut received fairly heavy showers measuring 65mm and 55 mm, respectively.

The base observatory at Safdarjung has recorded 193mm of rainfall so far, in September, against the monthly normal of 123.4mm. The highest rainfall in the last 15 years was measured in September 2021, with a deluge of 413.3mm. The highest-ever rainfall in the month of September stands at 492.3mm, recorded in the year 1900. The lowest rainfall during this period was in 2020 with a meagre total of 20.8mm, followed by another low of 21.8mm in 2015.

Withdrawal of monsoon from Delhi is drawing closer and 25thSeptember is the normal date. The rains are likely to recede for the next 4 days, including the weekend 21st-22ndSeptember.  Courtesy, another system coming up over Bay of Bengal shortly and moving inland later, the rains may return again, next week around 25th-26thSeptember. This may extend the stay of monsoon, beyond the scheduled date.
