When Delhiites woke up today, it wasn’t the usual morning that they expected it to be. So much so that when these residents got out of their homes, it was as choking as it could be. Well, the smoggy Delhi mornings did make a comeback after all.

The national capital and its adjoining areas of Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad were engulfed in a blanket of smog. The worst part was that the city was so full of smog that it residents could hardly breathe. The smog could be felt coming inside the houses of some of the residents.

For the past few days, light northwesterly winds from Punjab and Haryana have been blowing during the afternoon hours. These winds have also been bringing in the pollutants caused by stubble burning in the states of Punjab and Haryana. As the speed of winds were less, these pollutants have settled in the lower levels of the atmosphere.

The morning in Delhi was foggy enough and the visibility did drop to 200 metres and remained the same until 10 am. With the ongoing mist and smoke haze, these pollutants added fuel to fire. Thus, smog took a front seat over Delhi and NCR as both fog and smoke haze merged together wreaking havoc over the skies of Delhi-NCR. High humidity levels were another factor which was responsible for troubling the Delhiites.

Now this blanket of smog will persist for longer duration as the speed of winds is very less. Thus, for about the next 2 to 3 days, not much improvement in situation is expected.
