Even though the winter chill is troubling people of North India during the night and early morning hours, the fog-free lukewarm sunshine during the afternoon hours is acting like an ointment against the chilly weather.

Fog has remained absent from showing up in the plains of North India for the last few days and for the next 3-4 days also fog is not anticipated to become a hindrance in the road, rail, and air traffic.

According to the weathermen at Skymet Weather, the Western Disturbance which was over Jammu and Kashmir moved away eastwards on December 13. Since then, there is no active weather system prevailing in the Western Himalayan region, due to which the cold and dry northwesterly winds blowing from the snow-clad mountains paced up and gripped parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, Western Uttar Pradesh and North Rajasthan.

Due to these northwesterly winds, the temperatures came down steadily in the plains in the past few days, thereby resulting in cold wave conditions to prevail. However, in the last 24 hours, the mercury levels scaled up once again in parts of Delhi and other states of North India.

At present, the northwesterly winds are blowing at a moderate speed which is why people in the plains are relieved of the fog. Fog usually occurs when the speed of the winds is low, the temperature is also low and the humidity in the atmosphere is high. According to the weather experts, at this time only the temperature is below, while the humidity is low, and the winds are moving at a moderate speed which is why fog is at bay.

Meanwhile, a new Western Disturbance is expected to reach Jammu and Kashmir in the next 24 hours. Although this weather system is likely to be weak and will reduce the wind speed somewhat, this system will not be able to change the seasonal scenario.

Dense fog is still not anticipated to occur for the next 3-4 days in parts of Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Hisar, Karnal, Chandigarh, Delhi, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Agra, Faridabad, Mathura, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Noida.

However, due to some reduction in the speed of the wind, it may be seen at isolated pockets of these regions during the morning or night in the form of mist or light fog. But this will not make any obstacles on the road, rail or air traffic.
