Delayed onset of winter over Northwest and East India

December 6, 2015 4:37 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The states of Northwest and East India have been observing high minimums and above normal maximums for the past few weeks. The increased temperatures could be attributed to the continuous Western Disturbances.

These WDs have been restricting the free flow of northerly cool winds from the Himalayan region to the Gangetic plains. Therefore, weather conditions have remained the same since the past two to three weeks with no drop in minimums.

Presently, the residents of Northwest and East India are reeling under warm weather conditions, particularly during the morning hours. Also, due to moist and warm winds blowing over the region, foggy conditions continue to prevail over Northeast and East India.

Many areas of East and Northwest India are recording minimums around five to six degrees above the average temperatures. Not only this, moderate to dense fog continues to persist over the areas, there is no drop in the night temperatures.

These weather conditions are likely to continue unless a very strong and active Western Disturbance passes giving good rainfall over the hills of North India including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. This will further result in cool and dry northerly winds along the Gangetic plains, and cold wintry conditions will set in over Northwest and East India. From what it seems, the residents will have to wait another week for winter to set in.
