Back in the year 1999, Cyclone 05B rattled the coastal parts of Odisha so devastatingly that it left a dent in the country’s economy. In one of the worst weather disasters of India and in Bay of Bengal, this cyclone claimed more than 10,000 lives in its short lived time.
The cyclone was one of the strongest weather systems to have ever formed in Bay of Bengal but the current Cyclone Kyant in the Bay has some striking similarities with the travesty of 1999 storm.
For instance, the cyclone of 1999 originated near Yangon off the coast of Myanmar, exactly like the Cyclone Kyant.
The similarity doesn’t end there. Cyclone Kyant formed on October 25, 2016 which happens to be the exact date in 1999 when Cyclone 05B formed in Bay of Bengal. Even the expected date of landfall of Cyclone Kyant is similar to that of 1999 Cyclone, i.e. October 28!
The only major difference between the two cyclones 17 years apart is the fact that Cyclone Kyant will not be as devastating as the cyclone of 1999. Cyclone 05B aggravated to Category 4 on October 27 hitting Odisha head on. But the present weather system is most likely to disintegrate into a deep depression before hitting Andhra Pradesh.
Potential Cyclone Kyant may hinder Diwali plans over East India
In 1999, due to lack of preparedness and weak weather tracking technology, the casualties were more back then.
