Kolkata has been receiving heavy Monsoon rains for quite some time now. During the last 72 hours, Kolkata has received 159.6 mm of rainfall. In fact, these rains are expected to continue during the next 24 to 48 hours as well.
During the last 21 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Kolkata has received a whopping 59 mm of rain. A day before heavy rains of 42.8 mm had also been witnessed preceded by 57.8 mm of rain on Monday.
These rains can be attributed to the Monsoon system which had developed in the Bay of Bengal. While the system began as a cyclonic circulation, it underwent several intensifications and is currently marked as a deep depression over Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal.
The Monsoon system is in close proximity of Kolkata and due to its strength, more heavy showers are expected over the city of joy. In fact, a few very heavy spells of rain also cannot be ruled out during this period.
While the system is expected to weaken in another 24 to 48 hours, light to moderate rains will continue to lash the City of Joy. So far, Kolkata has received 284.5 mm of rainfall against its monthly average rains of 352.4 mm. By the end of the month, Kolkata may be able to surpass its monthly rains.
