Deep depression could lead to flood like situation in West Bengal, Bangladesh

Rain in West BengalA cyclonic circulation over Northeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a low pressure area on July 26. It gradually became a depression and now the weather system has concentrated into a deep depression.

On Wednesday morning the system was lying 160 km South/Southeast of Chittagong in Bangladesh, at around 21°N latitude and 91°E longitude.

As have been reiterated by Skymet, the system has been lingering on for a fairly long duration. It is expected that this deep depression will gradually move in a northerly direction and cross Bangladesh coast by the noon of July 30.

In view of this weather system, fairly widespread rainfall has been witnessed in Gangetic West Bengal and northern parts of Odisha. The system will gradually travel across Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and finally reach Gujarat. Southwest Monsoon will remain most vigorous in this part of the country.

As of now the intensity of rain is not too heavy. Here’s a look at the rainfall figures in West Bengal and Odisha during last 24 hours:

On July 30, many parts of Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha will receive moderate to heavy showers. One or two places could receive extremely heavy showers. As the system moves inland, the rain belt is expected to cover Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh. The main impact will be felt over Bangladesh. The system could also made landfall over coastal Bangladesh by late evening hours of Thursday. Several coastal districts of the country could witness flood-like situation as well.
