August 18, 2016 9:03 AM |

West Bengal rainsSouthwest Monsoon has been active over West Bengal for the last two days. The weather system over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Gangetic West Bengal intensified into a deep depression last evening.

The deep depression crossed West Bengal coast and is now lying between Digha and Diamond Harbour. The system is likely to move in a northerly direction for some more time and then further in a westnorthwest direction and weaken gradually.

During last 24 hours, most parts of West Bengal, mainly the coastal regions, witnessed overcast skies and frequent spells of rainfall. Many places received heavy showers as well.

From 8.30 am on Wednesday to 8.30 today morning, the Alipore observatory in Kolkata recorded 91 mm of rainfall. Digha, Midnapore and Bankura also witnessed good showers.

Gusty winds were blowing at a speed of about 70 to 80 kmph on Wednesday evening.

Rains will continue over the state for another 24 hours. Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh have also been receiving good rains. All thanks to the deep depression.
