Days continue to remain warm in west coast

While the weather in India has turned colder and everyone is happily enjoying the winter chill, there’s one part of the country where temperatures are still high. The west coast of peninsular India has constantly been recording maximums in the mid-thirties.

Here are the maximum temperatures of few places recorded in the last couple of days: Mumbai- 34.7⁰C, Honnavar - 35⁰C, Panjim - 34.3⁰C, Kochi - 32⁰C and Mangalore – 33.8⁰C.

Other than the west coast, the interiors of South India and parts of the east coast are also recording maximums around 33⁰C due to little rain in the last few days. Weather in Chennai has already turned hot with mercury touching 32⁰C.

“It isn’t very unusual for the west coast to be the warmest region in India even in the winter month of December. Maximums along the west coast are maintaining higher levels because of its proximity to the equator and the sun tilting towards the southern hemisphere”, explains, a senior meteorologist at Skymetweather.com

“However, one more factor, though not very strong could be the weak northeast monsoon this time around. Lesser rains obviously lead to a rise in temperatures”, he added further.

Kerala along the west coast recorded 426 mm of rain as opposed to 466 mm of rain from 1st October till 4th Dec.

Weather forecast at Skymet suggesst that the weather in India in most parts will turn colder as we move towards the mid of December. But the west coast and South India will remain warm and uncomfortable, with maximums maintaining temperatures in the thirties.

It is only during the last week of December, that the weather in the west coast will change and the region will start witnessing a drop in mercury levels. This is usually the best period to travel to Mumbai and Goa.
