Entire northern plains of the country are reeling under severe cold weather conditions. Due to the persistent fog over the Indo-Gangetic Plains, the day temperatures remained low over many parts of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar leading to cold day conditions.

Whenever maximum temperatures in plains are recorded at 16°C or less, they are termed as cold day conditions. Yesterday, Najibabad in West Uttar Pradesh recorded 10.5°C maximum temperatures whereas, Bahraich and Meerut recorded 11°C. Similarly, Supaul, Gorakhpur, Hamirpur, Karnal, Patiala, Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Agra also observed maximum temperatures less than 16°C.

Cold wave conditions are also prevailing in many places. The minimum temperatures were below 5°C over many parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and at a few places over East Madhya Pradesh. Meanwhile, Churu, Lucknow, Fursatganj, Nowgong, Umaria, Alwar, and Amritsar recorded minimum temperatures less than or 3°C.

As per Skymet Weather, It is the peak of the winter season, however, the speed of surface winds over northwestern plains are expected to increase. With this, the intensity of fog will decrease and the duration of sunshine will also start increasing as the fog will lift early leading to an increase in the day temperatures. As per weathermen, the marginal rise in the minimums is also expected, therefore the areas under the influence of cold wave and cold day conditions will also reduce.
