Cyclonic circulation in Bay of Bengal gives heavy rain over Sri Lanka

Rain in Sri LankaCyclonic circulation prevailing in southwest Bay of Bengal has been giving heavy rainfall over the southern region of Sri Lanka. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the system is presently moving southwards.

In last 24 hours, Batticaloa has recorded 59.3 mm of rain, Kandy 50.2 mm, Pottuvil 37.3 mm, Trincomalee 28.5 mm, Galle 26.2 mm, Kurunegala 24 mm, Mannar 17 mm and Vavuniya 13.5 mm

On December 22, Mahailluppallama received 88.2 mm of rain, Anuradhapura 72.8 mm, Mannar 68 mm,  Batticaloa 65.4 mm,  Vavuniya 61.6, Puttalam 52.4 mm and  Trincomalee 48.8 mm.

Heavy rains have triggered mudslides and caused flood like situation in the region. According to state authorities, at least three people were reported to be dead and over 60,000 people have been evacuated to safer locations so far.

In wake of the persisting system, the maximum temperatures have gone down by at least three degrees. While, minimum temperatures have increased marginally.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, intensity of rain is expected to reduce during the next 24 to 48 hours, as the system moves away from Sri Lanka towards Maldives region across Indian Ocean.
