It seems that long wait for Mumbai Monsoon is going to end very soon. All thanks to the Cyclone Vayu over East-Central Arabian Sea. According to Skymet Weather, gradually weather conditions are getting favourable for the onset of Monsoon in Mumbai, which is most likely by the weekend. It would be almost a delay by a week as the normal date is June 10.
The arrival of Cyclone Vayu has also brought pre-Monsoon rains in Mumbai, which have been silent till now. Monday evening saw first heavy pre-Monsoon rains for the season. With cyclonic storm Vayu now abeam Mumbai, conditions remain very much favourable for more rains today also.
After the onset of Monsoon in Kerala, criteria for the progress of Monsoon into further parts of the country include temperatures, humidity, clouds and winds. Whenever a sustained change is seen in these features, Monsoon is declared in that region.
According to weathermen at Skymet Weather, weather conditions are depicting Monsoon air mass over Mumbai and the credit goes to Cyclone Vayu. The tropical storm has aligned all the required features. The biggest change is the wind pattern, which is the most important criterion.
The wind pattern has now changed from northwesterlies to westerly or southwesterly, which are blowing from sea and is purely Monsoon air mass. With this, the sky has also become partly cloudy to cloudy during major parts of the day. On and off rains have also been reported since morning. When Mumbai displays these types of characteristics, we can say its Monsoon.
Mumbai does not see much of pre-Monsoon rains and thundershowers. We see these activities picking up the pace just before the arrival of Monsoon. And, this is what has been happening over Mumbai right now.
Hence, we now expect Mumbai Monsoon to arrive by the weekend.
