Mumbai rains begin in suburbs as Cyclone Vayu gets abeam Mumbai, more showers likely

Updated on June 11, 2019 02:30 PM: Mumbai rains have begun in the suburbs. Moreover, rainfall has become heavy in the suburbs accompanied with lightning and thunderstorm. Expect rains to spread out towards other parts of the city as well.

These rains can be attributed to the movement of Cyclone Vayu north northwestwards. The system is currently abeam Mumbai, but maintaining significant distance from the coast. Expect more showers today with the intensity increasing tomorrow

These rains have occurred in view of the system in the Arabian Sea, which has now intensified into Cyclone Vayu. The Cyclone is expected to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by evening hours, thereby even becoming a Severe Cyclone. Vayu is heading towards the Saurashtra Coast resulting in very heavy rains over the region.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Santa Cruz observed 40 mm of rains while Colaba saw rainfall to the tune of 25 mm.

Mumbai rains will now see an increase in intensity with Cyclone Vayu likely to be parallel to Mumbai in the afternoon hours today. Thus, Mumbai rains will be seen today as well with strong winds blowing during the evening hours. Clouding in Mumbai will also be observed.

Mumbai rains are expected to continue for the next two to three days and may be widespread in nature. These Pre-Monsoon rains in Mumbai, courtesy Cyclone Vayu will bring down the temperatures to some extent giving the residents some relief. Heavy rains are also expected in other parts of Konkan and Goa.

Evenings in Mumbai will be more pleasant than usual due to rains. Cyclone Vayu is expected to cause very heavy rains in parts of Gujarat causing flooding in some areas, however, Mumbai rains are not expected to be as intense.

Southwest Monsoon which has missed its onset date in Mumbai will also make an appearance in the coming days over the city of Mumbai, bringing in Monsoon rains which are much awaited.
