Cyclone Vardah which hit the land last afternoon near Chennai brought torrential rains along with gusty winds over both Tamil Nadu and the neighboring state, Andhra Pradesh.

After paralyzing Tamil Nadu, cyclone Vardah wreaked havoc on the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh particularly damaging Nellore and Chittoor districts. Strong destructive winds gusting at a speed of 110kph led to uprooting of trees and electric poles thereby leading to power failure over parts of the state.

Heavy rains ranging from 3 to 10 cm slammed several parts of Nellore and Chittoor districts thereby flooding parts of the Tirumala temple. In last 24 hours, from 08:30 am as on Monday, Nellore district witnessed a whopping 82 mm of rains. The maximum temperature also dropped to 5 degrees from its average and stood at 24°C.

During the similar time frame, Tirupathi also witnessed 73.9 mm of rains and temperatures also shed by 6 degrees from its normal, finally settling at 23°C.

Two people have lost their lives in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Human loss in Tamil Nadu was ten. More than 15 teams of NDRF have also been deployed in various coastal regions of both the states. Close to 9400 people staying in the low-lying areas along the Bay of Bengal coast were evacuated and shifted to relief camps yesterday.

The cyclone badly affected the rail and air traffic. In view of the prevailing weather phenomenon, all flights from Hyderabad to Chennai and Tirupathi were delayed or rescheduled. The South Central Railway also canceled some Chennai-bound trains and diverted others.

As per Skymet Weather, in next 12 hours, scattered light to moderate rains are foreseen over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. Thereafter, the intensity of rains are expected to reduce significantly and isolated showers are likely to continue for another 24 hours.
