Cyclone Vardah is set for landfall, gives rain over Chennai
Cyclonic storm Vardah is just a few inches away from wreaking havoc over the capital city of Tamil Nadu. The very severe Cyclone storm Vardah is presently over west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal around 86 km east-northeast of Chennai and is expected to hit North of Chennai anytime now.
The wind speed at present is 80-100 kmph and as the cyclone nears Chennai, it is expected to increase and winds may gust up to 120 kmph. The storm is expected to make landfall over the capital city of Tamil Nadu in the form of a severe cyclonic storm.
Heavy to very heavy rains with isolated extremely heavy showers are expected over the city during the next few hours. The city has already received more than 50 mm of rain since Sunday evening.
Cyclonic storm Vardah formed in the Southeast Bay of Bengal yesterday after sustaining as a deep depression for a few hours only. So much so that the weather system has given heavy to very rains over several areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In fact, several hundreds of tourists remain stranded in both Havelock and Neil Islands as sea conditions continue to be rough. Now, the system has moved slightly away from Andaman and Nicobar Islands and is moving towards the Andhra Coast.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, heavy to very heavy rain is likely over Andhra Pradesh on December 12 when the cyclone hits the coastal state. During that period, Chennai is expected to receive scattered light to moderate rains.
While interior parts and the southern areas of Tamil Nadu will remain dry, the north coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and its adjoining areas including Chennai will witness a rainy day. In fact, isolated showers are also expected over Chennai on December 13.
As previously, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, Chennai will escape Cyclone Nada’s fury and very heavy spells will not occur. However, the residents of Chennai will welcome the upcoming moderate spells of rain. Also, sea conditions will remain rough over the coastal areas of the state and fishermen should not venture out in the sea.
