Cyclone Vardah has already made a landfall near Chennai today at around 2 pm. Torrential rains accompanied with strong gusty winds have lashed the coastal district of the state along with other coastal regions including Andhra Pradesh as well.
Both Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are on high alert due to the cyclone. More than 15 teams of NDRF have also been deployed in various coastal regions of both the states.
Rains have been occurring over parts of Andhra Pradesh since last night. The holy Tirumala Hills also witnessed rains last night leading to hardships for devotees to visit the shrine. Moreover, the Nellore and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh are also likely to receive scattered showers of lesser intensity during next 24 hours.
Approximately, 9400 people staying in the low-lying areas along the Bay of Bengal coast have been evacuated and shifted to relief camps.
Eight fishermen, belonging to Tamil Nadu, have also been rescued from near the Sriharikota High Altitude Range.
Due to heavy rains and gusty winds, most of the air and rail traffic has also been disrupted. Most of the flights to and fro Andhra Pradesh have either been diverted or canceled.
The South-Central Railways has also annulled some passenger trains running between Sullurpeta and Chennai. Moreover, the route of Vijayawada-Chennai-Vijayawada Pinakini Express has also been diverted via Renigunta and Arrakkonam.
