Cyclone Vardah gives three-digit rain over Chennai
According to Skymet Weather, the cyclonic storm Vardah has made its landfall near Chennai. Heavy to very rains have occurred over Chennai and more rains are likely.
From 08:30 am to 02:30 pm on Monday, Nungambakkam Observatory has recorded 99 mm of rain, while Minambakkam observatory received a whopping 177 mm of rainfall.
As of now, the city is witnessing heavy to very heavy rains at many places. The intensity of rain is expected to increase significantly.
Not only the rains, but the squally winds have also been wreaking havoc. The storm has thrashed huts and houses, temporary rooftops, several hundred of trees have been uprooted, and power and communication lines have snapped the region. People are advised to stay indoors and those in low-lying beaches are urged to move to safer zones as per officials’ instructions.
As predicted, Very Severe Cyclone Vardah has lashed Chennai with heavy rains. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Nungambakkam Observatory has recorded 58 mm of rain, while Minambakkam received 54 mm.
Light rains had started on late Sunday evening, which had gradually intensified overnight. At present also, the city is recording moderate to heavy showers at many places.
Now with the system just some kilometers away, the intensity of rains will increase manifolds and city could record heavy to extremely heavy rains. Currently, Cyclone Vardah is about 150 km from Chennai. The system is likely to cross the coast, very close to Chennai during afternoon hours.
Squally winds of 90 kmph -100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph will start blowing over the city at the time of landfall. The winds may damage thatched huts/houses as roof tops may blow off.

This could also uproot trees. Major damage is expected to Kutcha and pucca roads as flooding is likely in the escape routes over Chennai. Power and communication lines may also suffer some damage.

Locals and fishermen are strictly advised not to venture out near the coastline. Sea conditions will be rough to very rough. Weathermen predict, that the tidal wave could go about one meter high, which is most likely to inundate the low lying areas of Chennai.
People are also advised to stay indoors and avoid their own vehicles. Stock adequate amount of food, medicines and drinking water at home and use them judiciously as they may be required in case of emergency.
