Cyclone Roanu puts Andhra Pradesh, Odisha on alert, flooding rains expectedThe deep depression which was over west-central and adjoining south central Bay of Bengal has moved northwestwards and intensified into a cyclonic storm Roanu. Currently, the system is centered at Latitude 15.1°N and Longitude 81.4°E, about 125 km east-southeast of Machilipatnam, and 350 km southwest of Visakhaptnam.

The system is expected to further move north-northwestwards along the Andhra coast and may also intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours. The system is expected to move along the Andhra and Odisha coast during the next 48 hours.

While the cyclone has spared Chennai from flooding rain, Very heavy to extremely heavy rain is expected to occur over many areas of Andhra Pradesh. Also, heavy showers are likely over the Odisha coast as well during this period. Strong winds of 80-90 kmph gusting up to 120 kmph will also blow over the region.

Areas that are expected to receive heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh include Kakindada, Machilipatnam, Ongole, Narsapur, Visakhapatnam, and Kalingapatnam. Cities in Odisha including Paradip, Chandbali, Bhubaneswar and Gopalpur will also receive heavy rains.

Seas will remain rough, thus it is advisable for people to not venture out and stay away from the coast. People living close to the coast should also move to safer areas.
