Cyclone Roanu hits Bangladesh, Northeast India on alert

Cyclone hits Bangladesh coastAs reiterated by Skymet Weather, Cyclone Roanu has finally hit the Bangladesh coast on May 21. The cyclonic storm crossed North of Chittagong coast around 5:30 pm.

Torrential rains accompanied with squally winds have been already lashing the coastal areas of South Bangladesh.

Further as the systems moves inland, flooding showers will continue over the region during the next 12 hours.

Thereafter, system is likely to lose strength significantly. Initially it will turn into a deep depression and then into well-marked low pressure area in 5-6 hours subsequently. With this, intensity of rains will also reduce over Bangladesh but light to moderate showers will continue for 24 hours.

The system is moving at a very fast pace and is likely to move towards northeastern region of India by Saturday night.

In wake of inclement weather conditions, northeastern states have been put on alert. Tripura has already started recording heavy showers.

We can expect torrential rain and thundershowers along with squally winds of 60 kmph - 80 kmph gusting up to 90 kmph to continue over Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Lower Assam and Meghalaya during next 24 hours.
