Post monsoon season, rainfall is generally on a poorer side for the state of West Bengal. October onward, the rainfall is on a reducing note. The normal rainfall for the month of October is 129 mm which is considerably good, whereas for November it is 23 mm followed by December where the normal rainfall is just 7.5 mm.
In October, cyclones go for West Bengal, Bangladesh and Myanmar and in November they go for Odisha. Finally, in the month of December they go for Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. All these storms, irrespective where they are, they do make a visit to West Bengal.
In general, the system mostly re-curves northeastward traveling almost parallel to the coast but over the land, thus bringing in rains for West Bengal. If the Western Disturbance up in North is active enough and has the strength to penetrate deep within, then also the state of West Bengal receives rain.
The month of October has been rain deficit by 49%, whereas November was highly deficit by 89%. For the month of December up till 17th of this month, it has only received 2.3 mm of rainfall, whereas halfway through normal rainfall should be 3.2 mm. We can say that till date rains have been satisfactory for the last month of the year.
Cyclone Phethai which has crossed the coast of Andhra Pradesh and has made a landfall between Kakinada and Narsapur has also given light to moderate rains over the state of West Bengal. The temperatures have also dropped significantly at many places over the state.
Talking about the temperatures, maximums over Kolkata have been recorded at 21.6℃ while minimums at 16.1℃. The maximums have come down by 3°C and tomorrow the sky will be generally cloudy with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. Diamond Harbour recorded maximums around 23℃ which is 4℃ below normal.
