Cyclone Ockhi: Rain in Mumbai, Pune begins, likely to continue

Skymet Weather has already predicted of rains to appear after a long break over the Dream City, Mumbai. These rains can be attributed to the severe cyclonic storm Ockhi that has been moving in the north-northeast direction.

In fact, since the late afternoon hours, the peripherals of this system has been giving intense clouding over the capital of Maharashtra. At present, very severe Cyclone Ockhi is over the east-central Arabian Sea, approx 590 km southwest of Mumbai and 770 km south­southwest of Surat.

As this weather system is anticipated to travel in a north-northeast direction, it is also expected to weaken gradually into a Deep Depression and would cross Gujarat coast and adjoining North Maharashtra by the evening of December 5. Hence, the much-awaited Mumbai rains that had already begun in parts of the city are expected to continue for another 24-48 hours with the intensity picking up pace by Tuesday morning,

In view of these rains, schools, and colleges have been shut to avoid any awful event. Pune is also witnessing rains.

Very severe cyclone Ockhi has moved away from the South Indian region and is currently located 690 km South Southwest of Mumbai and 870 km South Southwest of Surat. The system after moving in a north northwest direction for about six to eight hours, will recurve in a north northeast direction towards Gujarat.

Clouding has already reached many parts of Konkan and Goa. Light rains will commence over Mumbai, Raigad, Thane, Dahanu, Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon by tonight. On December 5, very severe Cyclone Ockhi will weaken into a cyclone.

Rains will increase in intensity over North Maharashtra around this period. During this period, light rainfall is also expected over the city of Pune.

Sea conditions are also expected to be rough on December 5 and 6. Intense winds ranging between 40-50 kmph gusting up to 60 kmph are also expected during this period.

Though rains will not be heavy enough to cause flooding, its effect will be seen over North Konkan and Goa. Thus, people are advised to take caution and not venture out in the sea. Fishing activities in the region should also be suspended during this period.

Thereafter, the weather system will enter Gujarat and dissipate and weather conditions will once again become dry over the area.
