Cyclone Mora to give good rains over Kolkata

May 29, 2017 12:08 PM |

Kolkata Rains

Kolkata and the adjoining region of Gangetic West Bengal were reeling under hot and humid weather conditions. During the similar time frame, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal including districts like Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Siliguri have recorded isolated moderate rain and thundershowers.

However, in a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, the city of Joy has recorded 25.3 mm of rainfall. These showers can be attributed to the cyclonic storm that has formed over east-central Bay of Bengal. This system is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours.

As per Skymet Weather, light to moderate rain and thundershowers will continue over Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata for the next 2 to 3 days. The intensity of these rains will increase by May 30 and 31. This could be due to northward movement of Cyclone Mora.

Though, the system is expected to make a landfall over Bangladesh coast but Kolkata will fall in the outer periphery of the Cyclone. Therefore, we can expect good rain and thundershowers over the region. Also, this will lead to significant drop in temperature over Kolkata.

Thus these showers will mark the arrival of Monsoon which is anticipated to make an onset over Kolkata in the second week of June.
