Cyclone Maha intensifies into a Severe Cyclone, threat to Lakshadweep

November 1, 2019 8:45 AM |

Cyclone Maha is now a Severe Cyclonic Storm. At 5:30 hrs on November 1, i.e this morning, it was located at Latitude 14.6 N and 71.7 E. It is further likely to move in Northwest direction and may intensify further into a Very Severe Cyclone by today evening. Earlier it was moving in West-northwest direction.

Geographically, it is located 300 km north of Cheriyapani Port, 400 km north-northwest of Amini Divi and 390 km west-northwest of Mangalore.

As the Cyclone is gradually moving away from the coast, the threat of rains over Tamil Nadu has reduced significantly. States like Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh will get only light rains in the next 24 hours. However, a few moderate spells are expected over Karnataka coast today. Thereafter, the rain activities will reduce over the entire South Peninsula.

This Very Severe Cyclonic Storm will then move further in Northwest direction. The storm is forecast to bring along strong winds and high waves over Lakshadweep Islands. Precautionary measures are intact in place for the islands for another 24 hours.

Even if the Cyclone is moving in Northwest direction, sea conditions will continue to remain rough to very rough over Kerala, Karnataka coast as well as South Maharashtra Coast. Now, gradually the wind speed will increase over Maharashtra and Gujarat coast also.

According to weathermen at Skymet, precautionary measures should be taken until November 3 for the entire West coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea for at least up to November 3.

We expect light to moderate rains with isolated heavy spells over South Madhya Maharashtra, South Konkan and Goa as well as over Coastal Karnataka in the wake of this Cyclone in the next 24 hours. Thereafter, the rain activities will reduce. Isolated light rains with one or two moderate spells are expected over Gujarat in the wake of this Cyclone.

November 3 onward, the weather system would have moved away further. This is when the sea conditions will start improving and wind speed will also start subsiding.
