After weakening into a deep depression on Wednesday, Cyclone Madi has weakened further into a well-marked low and is currently centred at 11.8⁰N and 81.3⁰E, which is about 100 km away from Cuddalore in the Bay of Bengal. Cyclone Madi will weaken further and its affect will become minimal in the next 24 -36 hours.
Though Madi has weakened, some effect is still being felt in the coastal and interior parts of Tamil Nadu in form of clouds which is expected to bring scattered rain with isolated good showers at some places. The region is also experiencing winds blowing at a speed of 35-40 kmph from the north east direction.
In the past 24 hours Chennai has recorded 3 mm of rain, Cuddalore 4 mm and Karaikal 7 mm. This figure is expected to increase and the interiors like Madurai, Trichi, Salem and Coimbatore will experience rain after a fairly long gap.
Looking at the overall lifespan of Cyclone Madi and its severity over the seas, the rainfall amounts are not commensurate with the expectations. This is because the cyclone has weakened rapidly over the sea itself and is affecting the coastal parts now only as a low pressure area.
