The Cyclonic Storm Kyant continues to churn in Bay of Bengal and is gradually moving towards the Indian coast in west-southwest direction.
As the weather models are indicating, the system is likely to head towards Andhra Pradesh coast. Kyant is presently centered at 16.6°N and 88.5°E, about 480 km southeast of Gopalpur, 580 km east -southeast of Visakhapatnam and 800 km east-northeast of Machilipatnam.
Though system is not likely to have direct impact over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, but peripherals of the system will give rains and thundershowers over the coastal areas.
According to Skymet Weather, several places of Coastal Gangetic West Bengal will witness light rain and thundershowers, with isolated moderate spells during the next 24 hours. Moderate winds speeding up to 25 kmph to 40 kmph will also be seen over the region.
Areas such as Kolkata, Midnapore, Diamond Harbour, and Sundarbans will receive rain during this time period. Sky will remain cloudy to overcast during the next 24 to 48 hours. At present also, coastal parts of West Bengal are witnessing cloudy conditions.
However, intensity of rains will reduce after the next 24 hours, as Kyant will move further west-southwestwards. But one or two spell of light rains cannot be ruled out.
According to weathermen, the cyclonic storm is not the sole reason of the rainfall over the Bengal region. It is the confluence of the winds from opposite direction that will lead to weather activity. Dry and cool northwesterly winds will interact with humid winds from Kyant resulting in rains over the region.
Hence, as touted earlier, Cyclone Kyant poses no threat to Diwali celebrations across West Bengal.
