Cyclone Gaja: Rain in Tamil Nadu by tomorrow morning; to increase on November 15

November 13, 2018 1:02 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Dry weather conditions are continuing over entire Tamil Nadu since the last few days. The reason for this dry spell can be attributed to the formation of a cyclone in Bay of Bengal. Due to which humid winds from Bay of Bengal which were travelling over Tamil Nadu have now diverted and are converging over Cyclone Gaja.

As predicted by Skymet Weather, Cyclone Gaja tracked in north/northwest direction during the last 6 hours. At 5:30 am today, it was near latitude 13.2N and longitude 87.2E about 750 km east of Chennai and 840 km east/northeast of Nagapattinam.

At present is Gaja lies over West central and adjoining East central and South Bay of Bengal. It is expected to intensify further into a severe cyclone as sea surface temperatures are favourable for intensification that is around 29 to 30 degree.

In wake of this system, we expect light rains to commence over parts of Coastal Tamil Nadu by tomorrow morning. Gradually intensity and spread of rains will increase as Gaja will move towards Tamil Nadu.

Further, Gaja is expected to cross South Tamil Nadu Coast by November 15 afternoon. During that time many districts of Tamil Nadu particularly Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Sivganga, Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari will receive moderate to heavy rains.

The northern districts such as Tiruvallur, Chennai and Puducherry will get light to moderate rains. We do not expect heavy to very heavy rains over these districts.

By November 16, most parts of Tamil Nadu will receive light to moderate rain activities. Sea conditions are expected to remain rough during the next three days.
