Cyclone Gaja: Kerala braces for moderate to heavy rains today

November 16, 2018 12:19 PM | Skymet Weather Team

As predicted, Kerala is all set to record good rains for the next 24 hours. In fact, the state has already started recording some rains. All credit goes to Cyclone Gaja which is presently over Interior Tamil Nadu.

After making landfall over Tamil Nadu as a severe cyclonic storm, Gaja weakened into a tropical storm and tracked westwards. With the periphery of the system reaching Kerala, moderate rains have already commenced over isolated pockets and showers are further likely to pick up pace now.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, Thiruvananthapuram recorded 44 mm of rain, followed by Alappuzha and Punalur 2 mm. Meanwhile, Kochi and Kottayam received traces of rain.

This system is now weakening and would continue to move in west direction. By the time Gaja would reach Kerala, it would have been degenerated into a deep depression and maybe even into depression by late evening today.

Therefore, we expect fairly widespread rain and thundershower activities to lash most parts of Kerala especially the central and southern parts of the state during the next 24 hours.

Moderate to heavy rains and winds reaching up to 60-80 kmph are likely over Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kollam, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Wayanad during the next 24 to 48 hours.

Thereafter, rains are expected to reduce significantly but scattered rainfall activity will still continue over isolated pockets of Kerala.

The month of November began on a good note for Kerala in terms of rain as during the first three days, good rainfall activity was recorded over the entire state. However, since then the weather conditions in Kerala have been almost dry. In fact, during the last two days as well, entire Kerala was dry.
