Cyclone Fani: Warning for fishermen in Sri Lanka as storm moves closer and becomes more powerful

The Cyclonic Storm Fani has tracked Northwestwards and is presently lying 750 km Southeast of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. At present, the system is moving at a speed of 13 kmph.

With Fani travelling favourable weather conditions, it is likely to form into a Severe Cyclonic Storm anytime now and further into very severe storm during the next 12 to 24 hours.

As the system moves closer to the Southeast parts of Sri Lanka coast, the winds speed will gradually increase to 30 to 40 kmph. Wind speed may even reach up to 60 kmph at times. As the system is moving far off Sri Lanka coast, the effect will be less over the Sri Lanka. However, light to moderate intermittent spells will occur over the country from April 29 to May 1.

The coastal areas may experience some gusty winds that might reach 70 kmph, over the North of Sri Lanka coast. The fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during the next few days. However, no damage is expected to the region as of now.

Places like that of Colombo, Trincomalee, Jaffna are likely to witness these rains.

As the system moves gradually towards Tamil Nadu coast, the activity will gradually decrease May 1 onward.
