Cyclone Fani to trigger heavy rains and strong winds in Bihar and Jharkhand today

Finally, the extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani struck the Odisha Coast near Puri around 08:40 AM on May 3, 2019. At the time of landfall, cyclone Fani was sustaining speed of 160-170 kmph gusting up to 190-200 kmph.

As per media reports, due to this devastating storm, five people have lost their lives so far and millions have been evacuated. The cyclone has given torrential rain accompanied with strong winds across coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal.

Fani is presently centered near Latitude 19.1°N and Longitude 85.5°E, about 390 km south/southwest of Digha (West Bengal). This system is now heading further north/northeastwards towards West Bengal. In fact, heavy rains and squally winds have already started lashing parts of West Bengal and Kolkata.

Talking about the eastern states of Bihar and Jharkhand, that had been witnessing dry and hot weather, are now all set to experience the effect of Cyclone Fani as they lie in the outer periphery of Fani.

During the next 24 to 48 hours, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in the eastern parts of Bihar and Jharkhand. Rest parts will also observe moderate rain and thundershowers. Along with these rains, strong winds will also affect the region.

Weather Alert for Bihar: Light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places with isolated heavy shower and squally winds will occur over Araria, Arwal, Aurangabad, Banka, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Bhojpur, Buxar, Darbhanga, Gaya, Gopalganj, Jamui, Jehanabad, Kaimur, Katihar, Khagaria, Kishanganj, Lakhisarai, Madhepura, Madhubani, Munger, Muzaffarpur, Nalanda, Nawada, Pashchim Champaran, Patna, Purba Champaran, Purnia, Rohtas, Saharsa, Samastipur, Saran, Sheikhpura, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Siwan, Supaul and Vaishali during the next 48 hours.

Weather Alert for Jharkhand: Frequent spells of moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers with strong winds to the tune of 120-150 kmph associated with moderate lightning will occur over Bokaro, Chatra, Deoghar, Dhanbad, Dumka, Garhwa, Giridih, Godda, Gumla, Hazaribagh, Jamtara, Jamshedpur, Khunti, Koderma, Latehar, Lohardaga, Pakur, Palamu, Pashchimi Singhbhum, Purbi Singhbhum, Ramgarh, Ranchi, Sahibganj, Saraikela-Kharsawan and Simdega during the next 48 hours.

Further by May 6, as Cyclone Fani will move towards Northeast India, rain and thundershowers will start vacating the eastern parts of India including Bihar and Jharkhand. Weather conditions will then become and dry and temperatures will start increasing once again.
