Cyclone Fani dissipates but rains to continue in Northeast India

May 6, 2019 8:55 AM |

Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Nagaland have been witnessing moderate to heavy rainfall activity with few very heavy showers since the last ten days.

These weather activities intensified significantly on May 4 and 5, due to cyclone Fani. As it travelled towards Northeast India. The system initially affected the northeastern states as a depression and thereafter as a well-marked low-pressure area.

Now cyclone Fani has dissipated, but it has increased moisture over Northeast India. A cyclonic circulation has formed over Assam and adjoining area. A trough is also extending from Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim to Assam.

Therefore, we expect on and off light to moderate rain and thundershower activities to continue over the northeastern states i.e. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Nagaland for at least next four to five days.

Moreover, due to such widespread continuous rains, the rain deficiency of Northeast India has improved significantly with Assam having a surplus of 9%. Rest parts have also witnessed near normal rains. However, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh are still far behind.

Further also we expect these pre-Monsoon weather activities to continue over Northeast India till the onset of Monsoon season, which is likely in the first week of June. Although there may be occasional breaks but now weather will not go completely dry over the region.
