Cyclone alert in Odisha as storm Roanu intensifies

May 19, 2016 1:50 PM |

Odisha cycloneJust the thought of a cyclone nearing the Odisha coast puts the local people on alert, reminding them of the disastrous cyclone Phailin in 2013 and Hudhud next year. As of now, cyclone alert has been issued for Tamil Nadu and Odisha.

The deep depression over west-central and adjoining parts of southwest Bay of Bengal moved northwards during last few hours, intensifying into a Cyclonic Storm Roanu. At around, 5.30 am on May 19, it lay centered at Latitude 15.1°N and Longitude 81.4°E. It is just about 125 km east-southeast of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh and about 350 km southwest of Visakhapatnam. The cyclonic storm is likely to intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic storm during next 24 hours. The system will keep moving along the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha for another day or two.

We can expect squally winds accompanied by heavy rainfall over Odisha on May 19 and 20. In fact, few places in the state have already received light rainfall with Bhubaneswar receiving 1.7 mm of rainfall, Chandbali 0.6 mm, Gopalpur 14 mm and Paradip 0.6 mm. Rainfall will be more over the coastal areas in view of the cyclone.

We would also remind our readers that the cyclonic storm Roanu has ushered Southwest Monsoon over some parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal, entire South Andaman Sea and Nicobar Islands and some parts of North Andaman Sea on May.

The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) is now passing through Latitude 5°N/ Longitude 86°E, Latitude 8°N/ Longitude 87°E, Hut Bay and Latitude 12°N / Longitude 99°E. Conditions now seem favorable for further advance of Monsoon 2016 into some more parts of South Bay of Bengal, Andaman Islands and remaining parts of north Andaman Sea during next 48 hours.
