While Delhiites are in full swing to celebrate the festival of lights that falls on October 19, a sad news for those celebrating Diwali with crackers is also in place. In the view to combat the issue of air pollution in the city, the Supreme Court has issued a ban on the sale of firecrackers on Monday.
Delhi tops the list of the most polluted cities in the country and to improvise the air quality prevailing in Delhi and its adjoining regions, the Supreme Court has temporarily banned the sale of firecrackers until November 1. Which means that this year Delhiites will have to stay prepared for a firecracker-free Diwali.
The Supreme Court has issued a similar ban in Delhi and NCR the previous year as well though it did not enhance the pollution levels. To bring in the notice, Delhi and NCR saw its worst of air pollution and smog last year that forced thousands of children to stay inside and hundreds of workers were reported sick.

This year, as the license of the firecrackers sellers stands temporarily canceled, hopefully, Delhi and its inhabitants might be able to breathe a comparatively clean air. In fact, this year, Diwali in Delhi and its nearby areas will be a smoke-free and noise-free affair.
However, apart from the burning of fire-crackers, the burning of farm waste in the adjoining states of Haryana and Punjab are also to be blamed for the increasing pollution levels in Delhi and NCR. As per a panel of Supreme Court judges headed by Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri, this ban on the sale of firecrackers will come into effect immediately and will continue until November 1. Thereafter, the air quality will be examined and the impact of this ban will be scrutinized.
