Countrywide Monsoon rainfall in June ends with a big surplus

Southwest Monsoon in India had made a delayed onset but, as foretold by Skymet, the performance was not affected and the countrywide rainfall in the month of June ended with a surplus of 16%. In the initial phase, cyclonic storm Ashobaa played a spoil sport and slowed down rainfall activity across the country.

But soon two weather systems formed, one was a deep depression in the North Arabian Sea, while the second one was a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. The Arabian Sea system moved inland across Gujarat up to Uttar Pradesh, giving good amounts of rain in the region. Few places in Gujarat like Amreli, Rajkot and Veraval received very heavy rain due to the system.

On the other hand, the low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal did not strengthen further but gave good amounts of rain in large parts of East and Northeast India.

Occasional Western Disturbances also gave some light to moderate rain in parts of North and northwest India.

All the four homogenous regions of East and Northeast India, Northwest India, Central India and Peninsular India saw the month of June end on a positive note due to the above weather systems.

According to the data available with Skymet, Northwest India observed a big rainfall surplus of 31% followed by 23% in Central India, 19% in Peninsular India and 1% in East India. In plains, Bihar was the only sub-division to record rainfall deficiency of 28%.

The sub-divisions that observed excess rainfall of 50% and above are, East and West Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Saurashtra and Kutch, Vidarbha, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and South Interior Karnataka.
The total rainfall in the country in the month of June has been recorded at 189.5 mm against the monthly average of 163.5 mm. Overall, 52% of the country’s total area recorded excess rain during this period, while 43% observed normal rain.

In June 2014, Monsoon rains had started on a very weak note and continued to remain so. The month ended with 93 mm of rain against the average of 163.5 mm, which is 43% deficient.
