Country sees two consecutive rainiest days of August

After achieving deficit rains of -2 percent on July 22, which was the best, rainfall activity has reduced now. Therefore, the month of July ended with a deficiency of – 6 percent. Due to reduction in rains, as on August 10, the countrywide rain deficiency fell down to a whopping - 11 percent.

Rainfall had been quite deficient on a few days due to which the deficiency had risen and remained stagnant at - 10 percent for a good five days. Between August 10 and 12, the deficiency settled at – 11 percent making it a worrisome situation.

However, rainfall countrywide picked up pace and the country saw two rainiest days on August 12 and 13. In fact, on August 12, the country recorded 12 mm of rain against its normal of 9.2 mm resulting in a surplus of 31 percent. The percentage increased on August 13, as the country recorded 12.6 mm against 9.3 mm of rainfall which means 36 percent excess rains.

Many pockets in the country recorded surplus rains on account of the western end of axis of Monsoon trough shifting closer to the hills. States of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand along with the foothills have recorded good rains during these days.

In fact, Sikkim and Sub Himalayan West Bengal also recorded good rainfall. The cyclonic circulation which was over Bay of Bengal gave good rainfall activity over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh. Moreover, Kerala and Coastal Karnataka also saw good rainfall activity.
