June 2, 2015 1:16 PM |

june rainfallAfter a long stretch of hot winds, heatwave, warm and dry weather, the much-needed rain forced Indian residents to take out their umbrellas. Moreover, if residents of Delhi, Bangalore or Nizamabad were expecting warm and dry weather, it is unlikely for another couple of days as brief showers are likely till Wednesday.

Even though May ended with rains only in the final hours, it remained a dry and warm month witnessing one of the deadliest heatwaves in the country. Several parts of India witnessed some of the hottest days of the season with maximum temperature reaching upto 45°C, forcing people to take extra care of themselves in the sweltering summer.

May was also the hottest in last ten years for Delhi. However, the warmth of May has been duly wiped off by the so-called-chill of June as many places recorded surplus rainfall that led to a drop of maximum temperature by stunning 10°C in a day!

June rainfall remains adequate

The first day recorded a whopping 89% surplus rainfall for the country with the major contribution coming from Northeast India and Peninsular India. While India’s daily average rainfall for 1st June stands at 2.7 mm, it received almost double its average rainfall (5.7 mm). Pre-Monsoon rain, cyclonic circulation over Haryana and Western Disturbance over hills of North India have rendered this intense rainfall across the country.

Rainfall in Northeast India

Pre-Monsoon activity has been in full swing during last few days in Northeast India, which has resulted in surplus rainfall of 117% over the region. Several states including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim received more than 100% rainfall on 1st June. For instance, Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places in India, received 541.7 mm of rain on 1st June and 181 mm of rain on 2nd June.

Rainfall in Peninsular India

With a surplus rainfall of 143%, Peninsular India received more than double the normal average daily rainfall on first day of June. Heat pockets such as Telangana, Rayalaseema and interior parts of Karnataka received more than 300% of rainfall on a single day. This rainfall was also helpful in mitigating the heat as several parts witnessed a drop of 10°C in just one day.

Rainfall in last 24 hours

Second day of June followed suit as light to moderate rainfall continued over several parts of India. Following are the rain figures in several parts of India during last 24 hours:
