Cool April On Record For Delhi, Rainy Days Ahead For Capital

April 26, 2023 12:52 PM |

The national capital is likely to witness better weather conditions in the remaining days of April. Though the wind pattern will change to humid easterly and remain mostly light, partial cloud cover will keep the oppressive heat at bay. Pre-monsoon showers will further suppress the rise of mercury and provide a decent comfort level.

April 2022 was possibly one of the hottest on record. This month, last year had clocked 15 days with temperature breaching the 40-degree mark. The highest temperature of 43.5 degrees was recorded on 3 successive days between 28th and 30th April.  The mean monthly temperature of April 2022 was sizzling 40.4 degrees as against the monthly normal of 36.5 degrees. Heatwave conditions were observed for more than a week.

April 2023 has relatively been comfortable, despite the earlier predictions of being a searing month. The day temperature crossed 40 degrees only on 4 days between the 15th and 18th of April, with the highest daily of 40.6 degrees on the 17th of April. The mercury is unlikely to shoot to these levels, at least for the next about 10 days. The mean monthly normal so far, between the 01st and 25th of April, stands at 35.5 degrees, which is a notch below the monthly average of 36.5 degrees.

Multiple weather systems are likely to throng the hills and plains of North India in the next week or even more.  Western disturbance, induced cyclonic circulation,  surface and upper air troughs and on top of all, the higher tropospheric level system will keep the region weather sensitive from here on till the 1st week of May.

Clouds are likely to descend on the capital city and suburbs today itself. The chances of any precipitation are bleak today. However, the weather activity will pick up pace tomorrow onward.  Delhiites can expect fleeting rain and drizzle on the 27th and 28th of April, albeit light in nature.  Light rain and drizzle mingled with a few moderate showers can be expected on the 29th and 30th of April. Rains are likely to spill over to the first week of May as well and could be more intense between the 2nd and 04th of May.

Persistent clouds and intermittent rains will keep the heat wave in abeyance at least for the next 10 days. Day temperature will stay far below the normal of 39 degrees and may even plunge to the low 30s on a couple of days. Sizzle and Sear will make a comeback after the first week of May.
