Delhi and the NCR region witnessed five cold wave days at the beginning of the month itself. However, thereafter, there was a little bit of break in between where temperatures witnessed an increase.
Delhi today saw the minimum at 2.4 degrees which was a degree above what was observed yesterday. As far as temperatures are concerned, there will be a rising spree in terms of minimums. In fact, the temperatures may even reach around 5 degrees in the coming days.
Delhi can see light rains around January 19 at night and early morning hours of January 20 due to the approach of the fresh Western Disturbance.
Cold wave this year has been exceptional. Earlier, we had five straight days of cold wave conditions in the beginning, which were the longest stretch in a decade. Now, yesterday and today saw cold wave conditions, making the cold wave days go to seven so far.
January 2022 did not see any cold wave days and was conspicuously missing. However, January 2021 saw six cold wave days and saw a spell of four straight cold wave days. For January 2020, cold wave days remained at two while January 2019 saw only one cold wave day. The longest number of cold wave days is at 12 which was seen in 2008.
Usually, in the last week of January, temperatures start to increase a little. There have not been many years wherein Delhi sees temperatures below the 2-degree mark.
For now, while night temperatures will be increasing, the coming days will see a dip in the day temperatures. The meteorological conditions will be such that will give the feel of chilly weather conditions as the day chill is more commonly felt by the common man. Moreover, with the presence of winds, cloud cover along with some rains and increase in humidity may result in some pinching cold conditions.
