The wait is finally over! It is official now, Delhi Metro is about to start Wi-Fi internet services in selected stations across the city. Although the full details of the rollout have not been revealed yet, Delhiites can expect Wi-Fi services in a few metro stations by the year end.
The five stations which have been identified for the Wi-Fi rollout are Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Vishwavidyalaya, Central Secretariat, and Hauz Khas. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has signed an agreement with RailTel Corporation of India in this regard. As per the MoU, the equipment for providing Wi-Fi at the aforementioned stations will be installed within the next seven months.
RailTel will carry out necessary surveys before installation of equipment. RailTel will also be in charge of carrying out maintenance of the infrastructure. Officials haven’t specified whether this will be a paid or free service. Initially, the facility will be made available on the above-mentioned metro stations only. In future, Wi-Fi service may be introduced inside metro trains as well.
The introduction of Wi-Fi service at a few metro stations is a welcome move. The selected metro stations are among the busiest in the city with Rajiv Chowk recording maximum footfall. Even if officials decide to charge for the service, it will still be of use to daily commuters. The move will also benefit Delhi’s tourism industry. More and more tourists are now using the metro rail service to make the most of their Delhi experience. Free or reasonably priced Wi-Fi services will encourage tourism and improve a commuter’s overall travel experience.
