The recent strong Western Disturbances affected the Western Himalayan region from December 9 to 12 in terms of heavy snowfall. These WDs were instrumental in dropping temperatures over the plains of Northwest India.
After heavy snowfall in the hills, the northerly winds blowing from these snow-clad mountains reached down to Central Madhya Pradesh resulting in a drop in temperatures. This led to coldwave conditions over some parts of Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
These weather conditions remained the same until December 16. But, the recent feeble Western Disturbances have resulted in the reversal of winds from northwesterly to southeasterly and southwesterly.
Thus, the temperatures rose by 2 to 3 degrees leading to the abatement of coldwave conditions from most parts of plains of Northwest India. However, some parts of South Gujarat are still under the grip of coldwave conditions. Now this Western Disturbance has moved away and northerly winds will once again start blowing and temperatures will register a drop.
Many places in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh will come under the grip of coldwave. Minimum temperatures are expected to fall by 3 to 4 degrees during the next 48 hours. Day temperatures will also witness a drop.
